Dieter Appelt: The pioneer of photographic art receives the Altenbourg Prize 2025!

A good reason to celebrate: Dieter Appelt was awarded the Gerhard Altenbourg Prize 2025! The artist, who was born in Niemegk, is not only a heavyweight in German photographic art, but also the first prize winner to be honored for his photographic work. The old country has a real treasure trove of art that will bring to light the diverse facets of this exceptional talent.

Appelt, who taught as a professor of photography, film and video at the Berlin University of the Arts from 1982 to 2000, is now transforming the Prinzenpalais of the Altenburg Residential Palace into a gallery of memories. The exhibition of his work will include his fascinating photographic works as well as drawings and objects. It testifies to his diverse talent and deals with topics such as his own body, nature, life, death and the recurring memories of these experiences.

A worthy award

The Gerhard Altenbourg Prize, which is considered the most important art prize in Central Germany, is endowed with 50,000 euros. The artist receives 10,000 euros of this, while 40,000 euros go towards creating a catalog and the exhibition. The award ceremony took place on November 16, 2024 in the board of trustees of the Lindenau Museum. This prestigious award honors Appelt's life's work, which has gained high status through his participation in national and international exhibitions, such as the Venice Biennale. The Lindenau Museum writes that Appelt is a “timeless voice in European art.”

His artistic performances are characterized by a love of detail that is reminiscent of Gerhard Altenbourg's way of working. For many, he is considered a master in the use of photography and one of the most important object and action artists of today. His work is also present internationally: his works have been shown at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Center National de la Photographie in Paris, among others. His influence is undisputed.

Outlook on the upcoming exhibition

The exhibition will open in the Prinzenpalais in the summer of 2025 and is a unique opportunity to experience Dieter Appelt's works up close. In addition to the photographic works, a catalog is also published that documents the artist's development over several decades.

Anyone who is passionate about art should definitely not miss this opportunity. Again Daily Mirror reports, the themes of memory, nature and transience will captivate visitors. We are excited to see how the exhibition is received by the public and the art scene and whether Dieter Appelt can continue on his road to success.
