Mega fun for the little ones: New playground Giant Dome opened!

On June 15, 2025, a very special playground was opened in Altenburg-Nord on Liebermannstrasse, which will not only make children's eyes shine. The playground bears the name "Giant Dome" and relies on an exciting design: a large sun sail spans climbing networks, ropes and slides that invite you to climb up and slide. The cost of this impressive play equipment amounts to around 300,000 euros. Thanks to the LEADER EU funding program, around 174,000 euros flow into the creation of this new experience space, which also contributes to strengthening the quality of life in rural regions. The city of Altenburg is investing a total of around 490,000 euros in the project, which also includes an upgrading of additional playing areas. Including the renovation of outdated play equipment and the establishment of a modern fitness area for adults near the playground, as reported.

But that's just the beginning: the "Giant Dome" is the third special playground in Altenburg. Overall, the city plans the construction of five unique playgrounds that are intended to help promote “playground tourism”. This strategic planning aims to ensure that every playground has its own special feature that attracts visitors. Mayor Neumann is already planning future projects, including a mountain bike course on the fairground and a water playground on the large pond, which are to be completed by the State Garden Show. According to MDR, local craftsmen inserted their creativity and skills in the design of the "Giant Dome", after they were previously involved in the development of the prototype.

An important aspect in the implementation of game projects is the active participation of children and adolescents. The playground initiative calls for municipalities and municipal providers to apply to redesign public scope or to renovate existing ones.
