B29NEU: Bopfingen breathes up - relief for traffic is getting closer!

The B29NEU project, which aims to connect Nördlingen with the Röttinger Höhe, is to relieve the city of Bopfingen and the surrounding places of national through traffic. The focus is particularly on the local crossings of Aufhausen, Bopfingen, Trochtelfingen and Pflaumloch, which are severely affected by the national traffic of the B29. In this context, the Swabian Post classified in the urgent needs of the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2030.

The project includes a line determination process for a distance of 15 to 16 kilometers. The status of the procedure is currently in the second of seven procedural stages, with a final start to construction is currently uncertain. A scoping appointment took place on July 26, 2023, in which environmental protection measures and possible room resistances were shown.

route variants and examinations

As part of the planning, a total of 14 variants were examined, which are evaluated both in terms of road construction and environmentally. These variants are defeated by a thorough shift based on 46 sub -criteria in the areas of traffic, environment and economy. The website B29Neu describes that preliminary planning is carried out to weigh up the traces of road safety, traffic quality and environmental compatibility.

various reports are required for further planning, including traffic investigations, the forecasts for traffic quantities and relocations, as well as environmental impact assessments that examine the effects on people and nature. Further special reports can cover the topics, groundwater, plants, animals and climate.

The preliminary planning is concluded with a recommendation for a preferred variant, which may have to be coordinated with the corresponding ministries. The continuation in the design planning includes the development of technical details for a preliminary draft and the creation of new documents such as landscape maintenance plans.

environmental impact study and hearing

The project goes hand in hand with a comprehensive environmental impact study, the order of which is to be awarded in the third or fourth quarter of 2025, followed by mapping that will be carried out from 2026. The hearing as part of the environmental impact assessment is organized by the district office in Ostalbkreis. At the end of the line determination procedure, the Federal Presentation Office determines the preferred variant.

In conclusion, it should be noted that the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan (BVWP) 2030, a central instrument of transport infrastructure planning, prioritizes projects such as the B29NEU. According to BMV comprises the BVWP existing networks and has a total volume of approx. 269.6 billion euros. One goal of the plan is to eliminate bottlenecks in important traffic nodes and to maintain the existing networks, which makes the implementation of the B29 new project all the more important.
