Construction site chaos in summer: full closures and diversions in Thuringia!

In the next two weeks, drivers in Königsee will have to prepare for disabilities. As reports MDR , the B88 is fully blocked, and this affects the section between Gartenstraße and Bahnhofstrasse in both directions. A clever route via Oberschöbling, Dröbishau, Herschdorf and Pennewitz ensures smooth diversion. There are also extensive construction sites in Katzhütte.

in Katzhütte, Neuhäuser Straße will be closed until the end of the week from Monday; Here, diversions via Cursdorf and Meuselbach-Schwarzmühle have to be accepted. The same regulation applies to Großbreitenbacher Straße in Katzhütte until July 18, with great importance to the diversion via Schwarzmühle, Böhlen and Großbreitenbach. A lot is happening - and not just in the street infrastructure.

Current construction projects in Jena

The city of Jena is also not spared by construction sites. After a year, the track work on Ernst-Abbe-Platz has finally been completed, and the trams of lines 1 and 4 are back to the university campus. However, the project has turned out to be more expensive and lengthy than expected. From Monday, another construction site will be launched on Kahlaische Strasse. The municipal utilities renew gas and drinking water pipes and power cables at almost 400 meters. The investments amount to a considerable 445,000 euros, and the road will be completely blocked by August 8th.

The Mühlenstraße stop is unable to operate during these construction measures. Tram line 2 will temporarily only drive from Jena-Ost via the city center to Felsenkeller and back. Depending on the one hand, this also shows how important road construction is in Germany. According to Statista , the Federal Running Strasse network has already reached an extension of around 13,200 kilometers in 2023. Road construction has a key role in the expansion of the infrastructure and is to be promoted in the coming years.

construction sites in Jena and the surrounding area

In the Jena urban area, there are several construction sites in the planning that affect the mobility of the citizens:

  • on the old vineyard: full closure until 04.07.2025 due to civil engineering work.
  • Burgauer Weg: full closure until 25.07.2025 for carrying out civil engineering work.
  • Camburger Straße (walk/bike path): full closure until 04.07.2025.
  • Ernst-Thälmann-Straße: full closure until 30.10.2025 due to line expansion.
  • Dammstraße: full closure until 08.08.2025 for lines.
  • Forstweg: full closure until 20.12.2026 for bridge construction.

The list of construction sites is long and clearly shows that road construction is an indispensable part of the urban infrastructure. Despite the challenges, such as the temporary closures and diversions, a sustainable renewal of traffic routes is being worked on - and this is in the sense of all road users. Despite the many construction sites, the transport infrastructure keeps running and shows that investments of around 8.5 billion euros are expected here in the near future.

The commitment to road construction is therefore promoted not only in the city, but also at the national level, with further increase in investments to be forecast to just under 9.8 billion euros by 2028. Whether on foot, by bike or in the car - all road users are invited to keep an eye on the current diversions and construction sites.
