Construction work: Rail traffic between Gera and Greiz stopped from November 16th!
From November 16, 2025, travelers between Gera and Greiz will have to replan significantly. From 11 p.m. the railway line will be closed for several weeks, meaning that trains on the RE3 and RB4 lines will no longer be able to run from November 17th to December 12th. This construction site is part of a large infrastructure project that will convert rail connections to modern digital signaling technology by 2027. A good reason to get information in good time!
Replacement transport is organized by regional and express buses. While the regional buses go to all the usual stops, the express buses only stop at the Gera Hauptbahnhof, Gera Süd and Greiz stops. In this way, commuters and travelers can still use their route, but you have to think about taking bikes with you - there is only limited space here. Travelers can find information about the best way to get to their destination in the train stations or online.
Special construction measures
This construction project also has further impacts on the infrastructure. In June 2024 there was already a similar failure on the route between Gera and Weischlitz. The coming full closure will form the basis for new installations, including the foundation of seven foundations in Berga and the installation of signaling systems in Wunschensdorf and Greiz. A gatekeeper's house will also be demolished to make room for the modernizations.
A digitalized signal box in Plauen will replace the previous, conventional signal boxes and will not only bring more efficiency, but also improved security. Launched as part of the “fast-track program”, this project promises to significantly upgrade the rail infrastructure in the region.
This should be a wake-up call for everyone traveling in the region: Before traveling, it is advisable to find out comprehensively about the current connections in order to get to your destination stress-free.
The conversions and adjustments at the train stations are necessary, even if they initially entail detours and changes for passengers. But over time, these measures will help ensure that rail transport in eastern Thuringia becomes future-proof and faster.
