Altenburg-Gera Puppet Theater: New program delights spectators!

There is great anticipation for the new season at the Altenburg-Gera Theater, as the puppet theater will open its doors with a festive opening on September 20, 2025. The piece “Zilli, Billi and Willi” begins an exciting season that features numerous highlights. Not only will there be new works to see, but also the return to cultural life that many have been waiting for. This is reported by MDR and announces an exciting 2025/26 season.

However, the opening is just the beginning. On September 19, 2025, the satirical premiere “I Hate People” will make viewers smile. A very special highlight of the season is the interactive piece “Wait a minute!”, which will celebrate its premiere on April 25, 2026. Here, viewers can immerse themselves in a waiting room and actively participate in what is happening. In contrast to this is the documentary-biographical project “Gehen.Kommen.Stay”, which highlights the history of Gera in the GDR and will premiere on June 13, 2026.

A celebration of the art of dance

The new season is peppered with shining stars especially for the art of dance. The “International Ballet Festival Gera 26” will take place from May 8th to 21st, 2026, on the occasion of 100 years of ballet as an independent art form in Gera. Here both the Thuringian State Ballet and international ensembles have the opportunity to present their impressive choreographies. The highlight of the festival is the ballet evening on February 6, 2026, which pays homage to her life's work in honor of the pioneer Yvonne Georgi. Stravinsky's works “Pulcinella” and “Jeu des Cartes” will be shown.

The theater also offers an exciting new interpretation of “Romeo and Juliet,” premiering on May 8, 2026. This fresh take on the classic will warm minds and certainly make you think. With so much artistic exchange and innovative ideas, the entire region will be dedicated to the performing arts for many months.

Cultural diversity for everyone

The program is extremely diverse: in addition to classical productions, interactive plays and concerts enrich the program, including a festival for children's and youth theater. The Altenburg Gera Philharmonic Orchestra is starting a multi-faceted concert season, with highlights including Tchaikovsky's “Fourth Symphony” and Dvořák's “Symphony from the New World”. European premieres, already appreciated by many, are also expected during the season.

Another highlight is the open-air spectacle “The Path of Orpheus”, which will run through Gera on August 22, 2025. An interactive piece “Blutrote Spitze”, which will be performed from June 7, 2026, allows visitors to slip into the role of a crime detective and solve an exciting case in Altenburg.

With the first-ever organization of the East German theater festival “Wildwechsel”, the Altenburg-Gera Theater is breaking new ground and is particularly appealing to young audiences. The festival will take place from May 27th to 31st, 2026 and offers a refreshing program for children and youth culture.

The last few months before the 2025/26 season promise to be exciting. Advance sales for the entire season begin on May 1, 2025, and culture lovers should act quickly to secure the best seats.
