Gotha celebrates: Exciting annual exhibition on the historical court calendar!

An exciting chapter in Gotha's history comes to life at this year's annual exhibition in the Gotha Research Library. The exhibition entitled “ADEL MACHT STATE” takes visitors into the world of Gotha court calendar and the “Almanach de Gotha”. Here you not only get to know the most important genealogical standard work of the European nobility, but also its roots, which go back to the 18th century. The “GOTHA” was created in the Enlightenment environment and has been published by well-known Gotha printers and publishers since 1763.

In 1790, Justus Perthes, who founded the publishing company in Gotha in 1785, expanded the program to include obituaries, historical works and geographical publications. The “GOTHA” thus became part of a diverse publishing range and quickly developed into an influential handbook for countries around the world. Wikipedia informed that Perthes' son Wilhelm took over the publishing house in 1816 and continued his vision after his father's death.

Insights into the world of “GOTHA”

The exhibition traces the history of the “GOTHA” and offers interesting insights into its development over the centuries. The content is based on the DFG-funded project “The Gotha” led by Prof. Dr. Markus Friedrich and Hannah Boeddeker from the University of Hamburg, which underlines the demand for scientific foundation.

During the duration of the exhibition, which is open from Tuesday to Sunday between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., those interested can not only marvel at the historical works, but also take part in lectures, discussions and guided tours. A special highlight is the “Open Perthes Collection Day”, which presents the variety of treasures archived there.

Special dates and publications

The exhibition is also accessible on public holidays, such as September 20th, October 3rd and October 31st. On October 22nd the exhibition closes at 2:30 p.m. For anyone who would like to find out more about the “GOTHA”, a catalog for this event will be published, edited by Sven Ballenthin and Petra Weigel. The title of the catalog is "ADEL MACHT STATE. The Gotha Court Calendar/Almanac de Gotha 1763 to 1944" and is available in the Gotha Research Library.

The heart-warming combination of history, culture and research makes the annual exhibition a must-attend event for all history and genealogy fans. Don’t miss this opportunity and discover the tradition and influence of “GOTHA”!
