Tartuffe at the Ekhof Theater: high tension and hypocrisy await you!

These days, a good dose of satire is in demand, and where better to enjoy it than in the historic Ekhof Theater in Gotha? From July 11, 2025, 17 performances of Molière's famous play “Tartuffe or the Deceiver” are on the program. There is sure to be something suitable for everyone, as some performances are already sold out. This definitely speaks for the popularity of this production, which is realized by the Friedenstein Foundation Gotha and uses the unmistakable charm of the baroque stage.

“Tartuffe,” first performed in 1664, offers plenty to smile about with its sharp satire on hypocrisy and blind faith. This comedy is about the con artist Tartuffe, who poses as a pious man and manipulates the family of the unsuspecting Orgon. Topics such as manipulation, blind obedience and family structures are still causing debate today. Director Naemi Friedmann and her team - including assistant director Elisa Oehme - have worked hard to bring Molière's timeless criticism of society to the stage.

Historical ambience meets modern staging

The Ekhof Theater is considered the oldest baroque theater in the world and has lost none of its original charm over the years. With 165 seats, it offers an intimate atmosphere that draws the audience right into the action. What is particularly fascinating is the original, functioning stage machinery, which is moved mechanically by a team of twelve backdrop sliders - and all without any electronic aids. A piece that impresses not only with its content, but also with the way it is brought to life!

The premiere is scheduled for Friday, July 11th at 7 p.m. and will last approximately 120 minutes, including an intermission. Ticket prices range from 50 to 110 euros, which is a good deal for such a cultural experience. The actors also appear in interesting roles: Wenzel Schneider takes on the role of Tartuffe, while Christian Mark acts as Orgon. The other important characters are played by Karla Sengteller, Petra Hartung, Jasper Middendorf and Rabee Hanani.

Molière's influence and the art of satire

Molière has always been a central figure in European theater and has shaped satirical theater with his humorous but equally sharp criticisms of social injustices. In addition to “Tartuffe,” other works such as “Le Misanthrope” and “L’Avare” are also notorious for their poking fun at aristocracy, hypocrisy, and human weakness. Molière's sharp wit and sharp characters revolutionized the world of theater and remain highly relevant today.

So if you're looking for a fun, thought-provoking evening, look no further than the Ekhof Theater. The historical roots and the creative staging make every visit unique. At a time when society is being questioned more than ever, Molière's “Tartuffe” is the perfect piece to address these issues. A real pleasure that also inspires!
