Terrible rear-end collision on the A73: four injured and closed for hours!

A serious rear-end collision brought the A73 motorway near Schleusingen in the Hildburghausen district to a standstill late in the evening of October 17, 2025. The incident occurred at 8:22 p.m. when a driver attempted to overtake a vehicle with a caravan and failed to notice the traffic behind. The consequences were devastating: four people, including the driver and passenger of the trailer as well as the person who caused the accident and his passenger, suffered injuries. The material damage amounts to around 90,000 euros. There was also significant damage to the concrete guardrail.

The motorway was completely closed since 4pm that evening and extensive diversions had to be put in place. All vehicles involved had to be towed away, bringing traffic to a standstill for several hours. Unfortunately, such accidents are not uncommon on the A73, which is an important connection between Nuremberg and Suhl and runs through the forest regions of Thuringia. In recent years, significant traffic accidents have repeatedly occurred on this route.

Traffic situation and accident statistics

Like the new reporting Day24 shows, information about accidents on the A73 is continually updated. Particularly important are data on the number of injured people, the type of vehicles affected, as well as current traffic information and reports about possible traffic jams.

In 2023, the traffic accident statistics of Destatis illustrates that rear-end collisions are often caused by fatigue or carelessness. This data helps to assess the road safety situation and derive necessary measures to improve road infrastructure and traffic education.

In such moments it often becomes clear that every second counts in traffic. Good driving skills and constant attention are essential to avoid such tragic accidents. Switching to higher vehicle safety standards in combination with awareness campaigns could improve the situation in the long term.

The events of October 17th remind us how important it is to always be focused and responsible when driving. This is the only way we can help ensure that such accidents remain rare and that roads become safer for all users.
