Steinsburg celebrates with its own song: 100 years of the Celts Club!

Hildburghausen, Deutschland - Today, on July 19, 2025, a very special event is celebrated in the region: the premiere of a song about the Steinsburg am Gleicberg, which is closely linked to the history of the Celts. The Steinsburg, the remnants of a Celtic oppidum on the Little Gleichberg in the Hildburghausen district, not only enjoys viewing because of its historical importance, but is also part of the celebrations for the 100th anniversary of the "Community of the Steinsburgfreunde" association. The close connection between the history of the association and the Steinsburg itself makes this premiere a loving review of the past and Celtic traditions, such as Insuedthueringen.de reported.

The Little Gleichberg, on which the Steinsburg sits, has formed a geological twin couple with a height of 641 meters and the neighboring survey, the Große Gleichberg. Both mountains made from basalt have their volcanic origin and are surrounded by impressive stone fields. These were broken in the Celtic period and used for dry stone walls to secure the oppidum. Wikipedia emphasizes that three wall rings were built, the outermost wall of three kilometers long and an area of 66 hectares. Nowadays only some parts of these walls are preserved, but they tell a lot about the architecture and defense strategies of the time.

Celtic roots and archaeological finds

The Celts, of which the Steinsburg testifies, built built from the 5th century BC Chr. Attached settlements, so -called oppida, along their trade routes, and many remains of these cultures can be found throughout Germany. For example, there is a more than two kilometer ring wall in Bad Dürkheim, which was used for trade. kelten.de describes how the Steinsburg led to looting and recovery of a variety of finds. Despite the destruction, especially due to the basal breakdown, many Celtic artifacts could be recovered, which are exhibited in the Steinsburg Museum opened in 1929.

The first scientists who dealt more intensively with the Steinsburg were active in the 19th century. Alfred Götze played an important role by taking care of the maintenance of the site after the first excavations were already carried out from 1874. Today, archaeologists and historians try to preserve the remaining remains of fastening and to recall the importance of the Steinsburg.
