Ex-soccer professional Kevin Kunz: From the goal to the firefighter in Jena!
Jena, Deutschland - A new phase of life begins for Kevin Kunz. The 33-year-old former goalkeeper of Carl Zeiss Jena and most recently at MSV Duisburg ended his football career to pursue his childhood dream: he becomes a fireman. With this decision, Kunz leaves a new chapter that looks promising. "I found a lot of similarities between the fire brigade and football," says Kunz, who appreciates teamwork, sport and responsibility in both professions. The change not only marks a change of career, but also an important step in his life.
Kunz was still in the hotel room shortly before the final decision, while he reflected his time at MSV Duisburg, where he was in goal five times in his missions and certainly had to reach the limits five times and during a quarter -finals of the Lower Rhine Cup. "I would like to thank the association and everyone involved for the support," he said, emphasizing his responsibility towards the family. With his wife, who continues to live in Jena, plans to return Kunz in the new profession, wherever he is needed. The return to youth love
Already in his youth, Kunz was a member of the fire brigade before he hit his sporting path. Now, after more than ten years as a professional, including his change in the summer of 2024 from Jena to Duisburg, he has received a promise from the Jena fire brigade. This was a clear sign for him that now the right time for switching to a new profession is.
Kunz has completed a comprehensive training in the past ten weeks that prepares him for his new job. He is currently learning to deal with heavy equipment, but the first real use is still imminent because he first has to acquire the basics. Despite the changes that come to him, Kunz remains true to the domestic colors: "I plan to continue to be active, among other things at the FCC games," he said. He is also ready for an emergency: "If it means 'blue lights out', I am there!"
His decision shows how complex the personal development of an athlete can be and illustrates the dignity of the lack of self -sacrifice when it comes to family and new opportunities. Chris Schmoldt, the sporting director of the MSV Duisburg, was positive about Kunz 'career with the words: "He presented himself as a professional and I wish him all the best for the future." He will certainly not only shine in football, but also in the use of the fire brigade.
