Fête de la Musique: Jena celebrates with live music for everyone!

There will be a lot of action in Jena on June 21st, because the popular street music event “Fête de la musique” is just around the corner. On this special day, which marks the beginning of summer, more than 30 music venues in the city will get visitors' feet tapping with a colorful palette of pop, techno, classical, jazz and hip-hop. The event takes place from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. and has now established itself as an integral part of the city's culture.

Stadtwerke Jena is taking part in the colorful spectacle for the second time this year. Their customer center at Saalstrasse 8a will provide the setting for a diverse musical program. Highlights this year include the Plain Jane Band at 3:30 p.m., followed by a performance by the Ukrainian choir Mrija and dance performance at 5:00 p.m. The acoustic pop duo Ju & Mi will take the stage at 7 p.m. Admission to these concerts is free, but a hat fee is requested for the artists in order to appreciate their achievements.

A celebration of diversity

The “Fête de la musique” has been celebrated worldwide since 1982 and has since spread to over 1,000 cities in 120 countries. It's not just about the big stars among musicians, but above all about the art of making music in all its facets. Amateur and professional musicians are welcome to take part and take their music to the streets. This happens without entry costs, making musicality accessible to everyone. The alleys, footpaths and squares of Jena will be transformed into a musical experience on June 21st and invite everyone to listen and join in the celebration.

Jena herself has been part of this global celebration since 2013 and has thus joined the International Day of Music. As visit-jena.de reports, the number of participants has increased continuously in recent years and contributes to the city's lively culture.

A global phenomenon

Interestingly, the “Fête de la musique” does not only exist in Jena. Cities around the world take part, and the event has different names in many non-French-speaking countries; many translate the event into the local language, such as “Make Music Day”. In Berlin, too, the festival is celebrated on the streets, where it goes on open air until 10 p.m., followed by the “Fête de la Nuit” in clubs and bars. The organization of these events is usually based on the help of local musicians and Musicboard Berlin, which is financed by public funds. This shows how well music and community belong together worldwide.

On June 21st, the chances are good that the streets of Jena will pulsate with the music. No matter whether you prefer jazz sounds, pop or the latest beats, there is something for every taste. So if you are still looking for a Sunday walk with a feast for your ears, you should mark this date in red in your calendar.
