Nuremberg celebrates its first win of the season against Jena – drama on the sports field!
On October 15, 2025, 1. FC Nürnberg celebrated an important victory in the Google Pixel Women's Bundesliga at the Ernst-Abbe-Sportfeld. The Nuremberg team managed a 3-2 win against FC Carl Zeiss Jena on matchday six. This not only marked Nuremberg's first win of the season, but also gave them a reassuring five-point lead above the relegation zone. In front of 1,087 spectators, the guests took the lead in the 26th minute thanks to a corner from Oliwia Wos.
Jena, which has had a difficult time so far this season, was able to equalize just before half-time. Nike Andersson found his way to the goal in stoppage time in the first half and made it 1-1 (45th + 2 minutes). But the second half should belong to Nuremberg. Nastassja Lein (60th minute) and Sanja Homann, who hit the goal with an impressive chip from 45 meters (70th minute), gave the team a 3-1 lead. However, Jena didn't give up and reduced the score to 2:3 in the 80th minute with a hand penalty from Isabella Jaron.
Difficult season for Jena
The 5-2 defeat is the fifth defeat in the sixth game of the season for Jena. After the game, coach Florian Kästner expressed his dissatisfaction with his team's mistakes and the need for improvements. The set pieces in particular have caused problems for the team, and the lack of several injured players, including captain Merza Julevic, doesn't make the situation any easier. Jena made two changes to the starting eleven: Nike Andersson and Elena Mühlemann started.
In contrast, Nuremberg started with the same starting eleven as in the run-up to RB Leipzig. Coach Thomas Oostendorp praised the increased lead over Jena and bottom-placed Essen, which is important for his players' self-confidence.
A look at the Bundesliga
The women's Bundesliga continues to develop positively financially. According to the recently published [Season Report 2023/2024](https://www.dfb.de/ePaper/DFB- Saisonreport-Frauen-Bundesliga-20232024-2/) of the Google Pixel Women's Bundesliga, the clubs' total revenue has increased to over 31 million euros. It is also surprising that the average revenue per club has more than doubled in the last three seasons.
The league also boasts impressive spectator numbers: a total of 379,653 spectators attended the games over 22 match days, which is a new record. With an average of 2,876 spectators per game and an increase in media reach, interest in women's football has increased noticeably.
The future of German women's football looks promising, with goals such as further professionalization and the creation of full professional contracts to enable players to be financially independent.
Finally, we can only hope that Jena learns from the mistakes she has made and takes the necessary steps to be more successful in the coming games. In the meantime, Nuremberg can build on positive developments and face the next challenges with confidence.
