Car sinks spectacularly into Bleiloch dam: Fire brigade on duty!
A strange incident occurred on July 16, 2025 at the Bleiloch dam in Saalburg-Ebersdorf, in the Saale-Orla district. A 64-year-old man wanted to take a few photos with his VW Amarok and stopped in a strange place. But like that n-tv reported, the accident happened: When the driver left the vehicle, it rolled about ten meters into the water and finally sank around 30 meters from the slipway below the Wetteraweg.
The alerted fire department immediately went to the scene and was able to recover the sunken car. Fortunately, there were no injuries, neither people nor animals, which is often the most important thing in such situations. However, the driver had to bring his means of transport to the workshop for at least 28,000 euros because the car was no longer drivable after diving into the dam. An investigation into water pollution was initiated, which was, in a sense, a double nuisance for the driver, who is now confronted with such consequences after a short photo walk.
Waters under pressure
An incident of this kind is not entirely atypical when you consider how often water contamination occurs. According to a survey from Baden-Württemberg, there were a total of 211 accidents in 2021 when dealing with water-polluting substances or transporting them. Of these, 36 accidents resulted in the contamination of surface water, which in some cases even led to fish deaths. More detailed information can be found at Statistics BW.
90% of the reported accidents involved released petroleum products, which further underlines the problem. The affected bodies of water include lakes, rivers and dams, which represent important habitats for animals and plants. Therefore, protection and prevention are of utmost importance in such incidents.
Although the incident at the Bleiloch dam ended lightly, it is another example of how quickly dangerous situations can arise. One can only hope that in the future drivers will pay particular attention to their surroundings before parking their vehicle.
