SuedOstLink power line: Construction progress in Gefell delights residents!

What's new from East Thuringia? The construction of the new SuedOstLink power line is gaining momentum. As Yahoo Finance reports, the network operator 50Hertz recently celebrated a topping-out ceremony for a new station in Gefell in the Saale-Orla district. This station is part of a large-scale project that includes a total of five similar facilities along the route.

The route stretches an impressive 540 kilometers from Wolmirstedt in Saxony-Anhalt to Isar in Bavaria. The station in Gefell is expected to be completed in 2026, before being put into operation in 2027. The new line aims to efficiently transport wind power from the north to the south of Germany, which is more important than ever in times of climate change.

Energy of the future

The SuedOstLink will be equipped with a direct current connection that will transmit an output of 4,000 megawatts in the future. This corresponds to the energy of around 1,400 wind turbines running at full load. This innovative technology enables low-loss and targeted energy transmission over long distances. To achieve this, 50Hertz relies on high-voltage direct current transmission (HVDC), which is implemented in the Wolmirstedt area, among other places.

Each of the two line connections on the route has a capacity of 2,000 megawatts and uses special plastic-insulated underground cables that are designed for a voltage of 525 kilovolts. The current strength is around 2,000 amps. At the grid connection points, the alternating current is converted into direct current in order to meet the requirements of modern energy distribution, according to 50Hertz.

Real progress for the region

The construction work on the SuedOstLink is not only of crucial importance for the energy supply. They also promote the regional economy and create numerous jobs. The cable section station in Gefell plays a central role in monitoring the power line. Modern systems such as voltage-controlled power converters, which offer advantages for grid stability, can also effectively overcome challenges such as reactive power generation.

With the SuedOstLink, those responsible are relying on future-oriented technology. The connection will not only optimize electricity transport, but also make an important contribution to the energy transition. Finally, if we capture the north wind and direct it to the south, then one can say: There is something really going on! Everyone involved has demonstrated a good knack for this ambitious project.
