New wind farm in Sömmerda: 10,500 households benefit!

In an exciting development, Energiequelle GmbH has announced the start of construction on the new wind farm in Sömmerda, Thuringia. This comes after more than ten years of project development and is a significant step towards sustainable energy production. The wind farm will consist of four state-of-the-art Enercon E-160 wind turbines, which are characterized by an individual output of 5.56 MW. Together they have a total capacity of 22.24 MW. According to energieunternehmen.de, the site is located approximately 20 kilometers northwest of Erfurt in a designated wind priority area.

Exciting times lie ahead - the application for approval for the wind farm was submitted in December 2022, and official approval followed in March 2024. Apart from the commissioning of the first wind turbine, which is planned for October 2026, foundation work will begin in May 2026. The wind farm will ultimately generate electricity for around 10,500 households annually, thus offering potential savings of around 27,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.

Environmental awareness in focus

A notable aspect of the project is the commitment of the Energiequelle Foundation, whose motto is “Renewables do good.” This foundation works independently of Energiequelle GmbH. Its advisory board, which consists of representatives from the region, including mayors and local leaders, aims to raise awareness of environmental and climate protection. To support this, a contribution of 30,000 euros will be paid into the foundation for each wind turbine in Sömmerda, as energiequelle.de reports. These funds can be used for charitable purposes during the operational phase.

The foundation's mission is to promote environmental protection, science, research in the areas of renewable energies and social projects. These include, among other things, youth and elderly care as well as animal protection. This clearly shows how closely the projects are connected to the region.

The role of renewable energies

At a time when the focus on renewable energy is increasing, the Sömmerda wind farm is further evidence of the growth in this sector. According to the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection, renewable energies in Germany will have reached a remarkable share of 18.1 percent of total final energy consumption for heating and cooling in 2024. In doing so, they make a significant contribution to avoiding greenhouse gas emissions, which are estimated at around 256 million tons, with over 205 million tons of CO₂ equivalents being avoided in the electricity sector alone, as can be found on bundeswirtschaftsministerium.de.

In addition, Energiequelle GmbH has been active since 1997 and now operates over 850 systems at 28 locations worldwide. In addition to wind farms, their portfolio also includes photovoltaic projects, substations and energy storage. The trend of increasing importance of renewable energies is reflected not only in energy production, but also in the creation of jobs: almost 406,000 people were employed in the field of renewable energies in 2023 - a high for more than a decade.

There is so much potential and commitment in the field of renewable energies that we are excited about the coming months. The Sömmerda wind farm is not only a local project, but also a valuable component in Germany's energy transition.
