Restart for Sonneberg's Herko site: Citizen participation in demand!
In the heart of the Sonneberg old town, something happens! The city administration has very clear plans for the Herko site, an area that has been shut down in recent years. According to a report of the Insuedthueringen.de plans to build between 30 and 40 single -family houses on the site. But where is the investor who puts these plans into practice? So far nothing has changed in this regard and the past two years has not been able to watch much movement on the site.
The Herko site could not only breathe new apartments to the city, but also new life. Sonneberg has been able to establish itself as the central location in Germany since 1990, known as the heart of toy production. Up to 40 % of worldwide toy production used to find their origin here. Even if some large companies have closed, there are still numerous craftsmanship producers who are liven up the local trade. The city would like to further promote this trend, in particular through projects such as the inter-municipal industrial area of Sonneberg-Föritz, which offers a convenient connection to the federal road 89, as can be read on Umbaustadt.de
development plans get on the way
The Sonneberg city planning department is already working on further measures to advance the development of the city center and revitalize unused areas. The Herko site is currently considered part of the development plan No. 69/20, as is mentioned on Sonneberg.de . Building concepts are processed as part of urban initiatives to ensure that the needs of the residents are listened to. Citizen participation is at the top of the agenda, because the opinions and wishes of the residents are essential for the design of the city.
But the projects are not only limited to the Herko site. Sonneberg also has plans for the former freight station area and the construction site of the former Woolworth department store. The city should not only create living space, but also promote a living city center. A look into the future shows that an average of 25 new residential units per year have been built in the past ten years. For the coming years, an increase of 475 additional residential units is expected, which the city could enormously enrich.
Overall, there are many exciting developments and Sonneberg has the potential to further consolidate its status as an attractive residential and commercial location. However, the way to implement the plans is still far and the citizens are invited to actively participate in the design of their city. It is to be hoped that an investor will soon be found to make the ideas for the Herko site reality. The Sonneberger can be excited to see how things will go!
