German shooters on the hunt for medals: World Cup in Athens starts today!
Today is an exciting day for the German shooters, because... World Shotgun Shooting Championships in Athens, Greece, have begun. The competitions run from October 8th to 19th and attract 406 athletes from 68 nations. The best German shooters are also there, including the outstanding talents Valentina Umhöfer and Marius John from FV SSZ Suhl.
The German team, which consists of ten athletes in total, is led by the two experienced shooters Sven Korte (Skeet) and Kathrin Murche (Trap). Korte, who won the European Championship title in 2022 and finished eighth at the Olympic Games in Paris, has high goals: He is aiming for a medal and can look back on a promising performance at the European Championships in Chateauroux, where he took fourth place.
The strong troops and their qualifications
Selecting the athletes was anything but easy. The qualification was based on two rankings and the German championship in Munich. There were a few surprises. Andreas Löw and Paul Pigorsch didn't make it into the top three and had to give up their place in the team without further ado. Marius John (21) and Tim-Luka Schmidt complete the men's team alongside Marco Kroß.
35-year-old Kathrin Murche showed true dominance in the women's qualification, where she left the competition behind with 21 more goals than second-placed Nadine Halwax. Sofia Weber, a strong competitor, also qualified. Valentina Umhöfer, 27 years old, joins the skeet team and brings impressive results.
