There is a very special place in Suhl that makes the hearts of young and old beat faster: the Friedberger Waldwichtel, Suhl's only natural kindergarten. At a time when capacity in many kindergartens is often low, this kindergarten has looked for a niche and impresses with a simple but effective concept in which the children spend a lot of time outdoors. Access to the kindergarten is via a narrow path that leads between garden plots and trees, and the entrance gate is proudly marked “Natur-Kinder-Garten”. The Friedberger Waldwichtel is housed in the Friedberg residential park and occupies six converted apartments in a block of flats. In this welcoming environment, a total of 35 children from the age of one year until they start school are lovingly cared for. The open concept gives children the opportunity to gain their own learning experiences and engage with their environment in a playful way. The kindergarten offers a variety of learning spaces, including a building corner, a studio and even its own Secret Santa restaurant where the children eat together.

A creative and nature-loving learning environment

Regular stays in nature are the focus of the educational concept. Children have the opportunity to experience and observe the changes of the seasons up close. The toy-free concept is also exciting: on the one hand, creativity comes into its own, but on the other hand, natural materials and everyday objects are used as toys. Two days a week, Tuesdays and Fridays, there are special forest days on the program, which are considered the highlight of the week.

“We attach great importance to health promotion and a healthy diet,” explains the management of the kindergarten, Anke Günther, who is not only an educator but also a special education teacher. The team consists of professionals with a wide range of knowledge, and the diversity is also evident in the families, who come from different nations and faiths. Independence, appreciation and a love of nature are the focus of education.

Special projects and inclusive support

In addition to everyday adventures, exciting projects are also brought to life in the Friedberger Waldwichtel. These include a cooking project in collaboration with the Sarah Wiener Foundation, a garden and forest project and the Weimar music mentor program. Inclusive care is also offered for children with special needs, so that all children have the same opportunity to develop and flourish. The concept of immunized health applications completes the offering by helping children relax and feel good.
