THW superheroes in action: forest fires defeated in Saxony and Thuringia!
A major chapter in the fight against forest fires in Saxony and Thuringia now appears to be almost completed. How cityreport.pnr24-online.de reports, the Technical Relief Agency (THW) was intensively deployed to fight the devastating fires in Gohrischheide and Gösselsdorf. Since the end of last week, around 1,700 THW staff from all over Germany have been supporting the firefighting, which underlines the enormous challenges of these operations.
What is particularly impressive is that the THW forces took on various central tasks: from ensuring the fire-fighting water supply to kilometer-long hose routes from a gravel pit to aerial reconnaissance using drone technology. THW President Sabine Lackner highlights the technical versatility and commitment of the organization, which achieved a delivery rate of up to 25,000 liters per minute with large pumps. This meant that up to 3 million liters of water could be pumped every day to support the fire department in their extinguishing work.
Urgent caution in areas contaminated with ammunition
The situation was particularly complicated in Gohrischheide, an area that is confronted with burdensome contaminated sites such as ammunition. Extreme caution and precise coordination of the emergency services were required here. The THW set up a central staging area in Zeithain, which was designed for up to 1,200 emergency services. In addition to food and sanitary facilities, this room also contained management positions and mobile workshops to enable the THW staff to work effectively.
During the operation, up to 3,300 meals were prepared per day, which underlines the logistical masterpiece of the THW. The great commitment and team spirit of the helpers show how important quick and efficient support is in such crisis situations.
THW at a glance: From volunteerism to professionalism
The THW, which has around 88,000 volunteers, is not only active domestically but also internationally involved in civil protection. Their core tasks range from supporting firefighting and water supplies to rescuing people and property. This broad spectrum of activities makes the THW an indispensable institution in the field of disaster control.
But in addition to the current missions, the THW Foundation is also working on the long-term orientation of the organization. This is dedicated to special training projects, sustainable youth initiatives and research projects on disaster management. This is an attempt to inspire the next generations for the THW and at the same time to professionalize the emergency services for the challenges of tomorrow, as the information on stiftung-thw.de show impressively.
In view of the extensive support from the THW forces and the close cooperation with the fire department and the Bundeswehr, the challenge is how fires can be fought even more effectively in the future. The emergency services have shown that they have a good knack for complex situations and can achieve great things together.
