Fatal motorcycle accident in Thuringia: driver has a serious accident!
On Tuesday, June 18th, a serious motorcycle accident occurred on the country road between Auma and Krölpa in the Saale-Orla district, which resulted in the death of a 28-year-old driver. The motorcyclist drifted left in a right-hand bend and crashed into a telephone pole. The impact was so severe that the driver ended up lying in the neighboring forest. Despite the quick response of rescue workers who tried to resuscitate the injured man, any help came too late. A rescue helicopter was also called to the scene, but the rescue workers were unable to do anything. The exact circumstances of the incident are still unclear, but initial indications suggest that excessive speed may have played a role. The police began an investigation and the motorcycle was recovered for safekeeping.[1]
The tragic event is not the first of its kind in the region. Just a few days earlier there had been another fatal motorcycle accident in northern Thuringia, also on a popular motorcycle route section. A 28-year-old motorcyclist drove off the road in a curve on Saturday afternoon and crashed into a tree stump. He also had to succumb to his hospitalization due to his serious injuries. While the police are investigating the causes of the accident here, it is becoming clear that the connecting road between B4 and B81 via Sophienhof is very popular among motorcyclists due to its curves and landscape. But these very circumstances also harbor risks that should not be underestimated.[2]
Accident risks for motorcyclists
There are a whopping 4.7 million motorcycles registered in Germany, and the risk of accidents for bikers is undeniably higher than for drivers. Fast machines without crumple zones, seat belts or often even without ABS make driving on two wheels particularly dangerous. Statistics show that motorcyclists are four times more likely to be involved in an accident, while their accident rate is seven times higher than that of car drivers. Over 500 fatal accidents and almost 10,000 serious injuries per year are not uncommon. The percentage of motorcyclists among traffic fatalities is continually increasing, although the total number of fatal accidents has been declining since 2000.[3]
What is particularly frightening is the fact that almost every fourth traffic accident outside of urban areas involves a motorcyclist. Over a third of these accidents are solo accidents, where driving errors or excessive speed are the main causes. The ADAC therefore strongly advises motorcyclists to drive defensively, carry out regular safety checks and wear protective clothing. In addition, new technologies such as cornering ABS and blind spot assistants are strongly recommended to minimize the risk.
The current accidents are an urgent appeal to all two-wheeler riders: safety comes first. Sometimes it is advisable to press the accelerator a little more gently and acknowledge the physical limitations of your vehicle. After all, we all want riding on two wheels to remain not just a hobby, but also safe.
