Freedom lights in Mühlhausen: the old town shines in a sea of lights!
It will be colorful and bright in the historic old town of Mühlhausen! The “Freedom Lights” event will take place there on October 17th and 18th, 2025, which is intended to transform the old town into an impressive sea of lights. The aim of this event is not only to highlight the beauty of the city, but also to enable visitors to experience stories of resistance and freedom. The event simultaneously marks the end of the Thuringian State Exhibition and the commemorative year “2025: Year of Freedom”.
In total there will be light installations at five medieval churches: St. Mary's Church, Kornmarkt Church, Divi Blasii Church, All Saints Church and St. Jakobi Church. With modern video mapping, the scenery comes to life and an impressive combination of light art and audiovisual worlds of experience is created. Visitors can look forward to customized video projections and sound effects that bring the region's historical scenarios to life.
Competition for young artists
A particularly exciting aspect of “Liberty Lights” is the international competition for young artists. They are invited to submit their concepts for light art, with the themes of freedom, resistance and social change in the foreground. We are looking for creative contributions such as projections, light sculptures or interactive installations that will be showcased in the seven selected locations in the old town. Call for art describes that the artists can deal with the topic experimentally, narratively or abstractly.
The submitted concepts must be submitted by June 30, 2025. A public vote will take place from July 7th to 25th, 2025, in which the community can decide on the work of art at St. Mary's Church. Anyone who wants to participate can easily vote online - another incentive to connect with the region's art scene. Information about voting is available at Freedom 2025.
A feast for the senses
In addition to the light installations, there will be a varied accompanying program. Your physical well-being is taken care of, and musical performances and sound art will round off the experience. The event is open from 7:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. and offers visitors the opportunity to immerse themselves in the fascinating ambience until late into the night.
So prepare to see the old town of Mühlhausen in a whole new light. The “Freedom Shine” promises to be not only a feast for the eyes but also a feast for the ears. Don't forget: Save the date and vote for your favorite work of art later!
