Geriatrics Congress in Weimar: A complete success for the medicine of the future!
The Geriatrics Congress of the German Society for Geriatrics (DGG) set a remarkable highlight in the Weimarhalle from September 30th to October 3rd, 2025. On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the DGG, 777 participants from clinical, research and practice gathered in the charming city of Weimar to exchange information about the latest scientific findings and have practical discussions. The congress thus created an inspiring framework for interdisciplinary exchange, as IDW Online highlights.
Professor Michael Denkinger, the congress president, welcomed insights into modern solutions for complex medicine and advances in geriatric medicine. “We see that geriatrics is increasingly in demand, both in terms of content and policy,” he said in his opening speech, which underpinned the modern and team-oriented concept of geriatrics. It was further emphasized that interdisciplinary collaboration with other disciplines and professions is of great importance in order to meet the challenges in geriatric care. This approach is not only described as modern, but also as sustainable, as the DGG reports on its website.
Insights and special events
The event featured a wealth of activities: an extraordinary science slam, social evenings and a morning congress run created an inspiring and dynamic atmosphere. In addition to the fresh insights and discussions, the graphic recording also provided visual highlights that were intended to support the understanding of the complex topics. In addition, the geriatric assessment was the first primarily geriatric S3 guideline published by the DGG this year, which underlines the progressive nature of the congress.
A large part of the congress was dedicated to evidence-based help for patients. The scientific committee explained that structured approaches to complexity medicine are necessary to meet the needs of the older population. These challenges could only be overcome through close cooperation between different disciplines.
The look into the future
The DGG has already defined the overarching topics for the coming congress. From January 2025, contributions can be submitted online and the deadline for submission is April 13, 2025. If you want to stay up to date, you have the option of being informed about all current developments and important dates via an email newsletter. An information flyer is also available, as announced on the DGG website.
The commitment to improving the quality of life of seriously ill people does not only play a role in geriatrics. Facilities such as the hospice service make an important contribution to this by offering sensitive and dignified support for those affected and their relatives. This cooperation between different sectors of health care is crucial to making life worth living right up to the end. And here too the value of interdisciplinary collaboration in geriatrics is evident, as Eduardus describes.
The Geriatrics Congress in Weimar not only focused on the current state of science and practice, but also provided an outlook on the close cooperation between various disciplines that has become necessary. The experiences and knowledge gained will certainly have a lasting impact on geriatric care in the future.
