New depot in Weimar: groundbreaking for modern workplaces!
In Weimar, the city administration pulls all the stops to actively shape the future. On June 27, 2025, the groundbreaking for a new depot took place in Schwanseestrasse. Representatives of the city as well as funding providers and project participants were optimistic. The new building should replace the previous location, which no longer meets the current requirements. The planned modern company building promises improved working conditions and is also being built energy -efficiently, with 97 % of the energy requirement comes from renewable sources. The completion is planned for spring 2027, with the demolition work began in May. These measures are part of a comprehensive strategy for urban development.
Not just infrastructure projects are on the agenda. On the same day, the city council decided to close five daycare centers, a step that is not entirely surprising given the demographic change. The new needs plan for childcare care provides to reduce around 500 places by summer 2026, which entails the closure of facilities such as the Kita Benjamin Blümchen, the cultural kindergarten at the Goethepark and other kindergartens in Taubach and Gelmeroda. The almost empty day care center in Tröbsdorf, where all parents have deregistered their children, is particularly striking. So it remains to be seen how the families concerned will cope with the reduced space.
New need for day care centers
But what exactly happens with the little Weimarers now? By the middle of the next year, two years from daycare centers could switch to schools, the city expects fewer than 300 children to be redistributed to other facilities. The aim of the city administration is to combine the groups and ideally maintain the previous teachers in order to make the transition for the children as gently as possible. These decisions were the focus of the meeting of the youth welfare committee, which was discussed on June 3, while the city council decided on the new needs plan on June 25th.
These changes are done as part of the integrated urban development concept (ISEK), which aims to bring together different planning levels. The ISEK, which was decided in 2011, is intended to serve as the basis for future urban development measures. Thanks to the positive population development and future specialist plans, Weimar will be able to address current challenges in a targeted manner and to promote a dynamic discussion on urban development. The ISEK represents an important framework for the upcoming changes, which can be felt both in the infrastructure and in the social structure of the city.
sustainability in focus
In parallel to these developments, the Thuringian universities found a network of sustainability to which ten state universities belong. The aim of this new merger is to counteract the challenges of climate change, the loss of biodiversity and social inequalities together. In view of the increasingly urgent environmental problems, a comprehensive sustainability approach in teaching and research is sought. The members of the network include highly respected institutions such as the Bauhaus University Weimar, which underlines the importance of the project. To round off the weekend, the day of architecture invites you to visit 45 contemporary construction projects on June 28th and 29th in Thuringia. In Weimar and the surrounding area, seven exciting buildings can be explored, including a classroom made of straw bales in Holzdorf and a practice for cardiology in Weimar. The program includes various tours as well as a construction site tour of the “Alte Feuerwache” neighborhood project in Weimar and a curator tour in Eiermann construction in Apolda. This gives the population the opportunity to gain an insight into innovative building approaches and current trends and to actively participate in the design of their city.
In Weimar a lot is happening; From the basic infrastructure to significant changes in the education sector, the city has great need for action, which is addressed in a variety of ways.
