Thuringia celebrates sporting success: where every second child is active!
On August 14, 2025, a big festival for Thuringian sports took place in the Weimar climbing hall, celebrating the achievements and community of the over 3,200 sports clubs in the region. Over 385,000 members are active and for the first time every second child in Thuringia is part of a club. In his speech, Sports Minister Stefan Gruhner emphasized the close connection between sport and volunteer work and thanked the numerous committed people who make a significant contribution to promoting sport. At this event, visitors were able to experience exciting sporting highlights, including show climbing and valuable encounters with athletes and officials.
The promotion of Thuringian sport is strongly based on supporting voluntary work. Therefore, 15 million euros have been made available, of which 1.5 million euros have already been applied for. During the celebration, Gruhner handed over a funding notice for 29,000 euros to the state sports association to cover the GEMA fees. Interested clubs can now submit applications for funding on the website thueringen.de can be found.
Honoring volunteer work
The event was not only a place of celebration, but also of thanks. Gruhner praised the tireless work of the volunteers, which often works in secret but is invaluable to the sports community. Sports State Secretary David Möller and State Parliament President Thadäus König were also present and supported Gruhner's message that volunteerism is a cornerstone of sport in Thuringia.
Application forms for financial support are now available for those interested. All sports clubs can use these to realize their projects. Further information on applications and funding eligibility can be found at www.ehrenamt-thueringen.de.
