Trier celebrates unity festival: pack singing, comedy and contemporary witnesses live!

A very special citizens' festival for German unity will take place on October 3rd in the Brunnenhof in Trier. This year the event is celebrating 35 years of German unity. From 2 p.m., various program items provide entertainment and exchange, including performances by the music school and interesting conversations with contemporary witnesses. For example, former mayor Helmut Schröer will report on the founding of the twin town relationship between Trier and Weimar. Other guests include Hans Petzholdt, who supported the development of the construction administration in Weimar after the fall of the Wall, and Andreas Hoffmann, who was part of the first Trier tours to Weimar and still maintains close friendships there today. [Lokalo] reports that the discussion will be moderated by the well-known journalist Alexandra Meusel.

The festival, which opens ceremoniously at 2 p.m., promises a colorful program: In addition to the choir workshop of the Karl Berg Music School at 2 p.m., a cello ensemble will also give its best. The discussion with contemporary witnesses follows at 4 p.m., before comedians and poetry slammers provide funny entertainment at “Slamedy” at 4:45 p.m. From 6.30 p.m. it will be “Singing for everyone” with Julia Reidenbach and her band as part of the “October 3rd – Germany sings and sounds” campaign. The musical conclusion to the celebrations will be the concert by Eli & Friends at 8 p.m., who will ensure a good mood with their “Feel good music” from Trier. By the way, entry is free!

A look back at German unity

But it's not just the festival itself that has a tradition: October 3rd commemorates an important moment in German history. On October 3, 1990, the GDR officially joined the Federal Republic of Germany, which formed the basis for today's unity. This historic decision was passed in the GDR People's Chamber on August 23, 1990 and was ultimately more well received by the population than many would have imagined. In addition, the first democratic local elections in the GDR took place on May 6, 1990, which set the course for a new political development. [Volksfreund] also reported on the close connection between Trier and Weimar, which was strengthened on August 31, 1990 with the confirmation of their sister city relationship.

The town twinning between Trier and Weimar is not only a testament to friendship, but also a bridge between East and West Germany. These partnerships have grown in recent years as a foundation for solidarity between former governments. They promote exchange and encounters and show how political connections can develop into real friendships. This also illustrates the role of town twinning in the Festival of German Unity, which was first celebrated centrally in Hamburg in 1991 and has since been held in various cities.

Celebrate together and share memories

One of the main goals of this year's festival in Trier is to further promote the spirit of togetherness between East and West Germany. There have been many challenges in the past, but the Unity Festival offers the perfect opportunity to look back on positive developments and the unity that has been lived. The program is not only a musical highlight, but also a platform to learn about history and talk to contemporary witnesses. This not only strengthens the awareness of one's own identity, but also contributes to the internal unity of Germans. So the community festival in the Brunnenhof will be a nice day for everyone. Anyone who can should take the opportunity to be part of this important occasion.
