Driving license revocations in Thuringia: Hundreds affected, cause health!
In 2024, a total of 739 people in Thuringia had their driving licenses revoked due to health problems. Thüringen24 reports this and refers to a request from the Left Party member of the state parliament Sascha Bilay to the Ministry of the Interior. The affected people were deemed unfit to drive motor vehicles by the local driving license authorities due to illnesses or impaired vision. The Nordhausen district is particularly affected, where the most withdrawals were recorded with 89 cases.
The regions of Saalfeld-Rudolstadt (74 cases) and Erfurt (64 cases) are also very popular when it comes to driving license revocations due to health reasons. 12 cases were found in Weimar itself and 14 in Weimarer Land. A legal basis for these measures is the Driving License Ordinance, which lists all relevant illnesses and restrictions that can affect the ability to drive, such as neurological illnesses, mental disorders or vision problems.
Who is allowed to drive and who is not?
Although the revocation of a driver's license can result in significant restrictions for those affected, in certain cases it is possible to continue driving despite health problems. For this purpose, regular medical examinations must be submitted. This often affects older people or people with chronic illnesses who may be able to return to driving after a medical assessment.
In addition to the health issues, 50 people lost their driving license because they were deemed unfit to drive. Reasons for this include, for example, ignorance of traffic rules. An eye should also be kept on the 531 cases in which the driving of vehicles such as e-scooters or bicycles was prohibited, mainly due to alcohol or drug abuse.
Legal basis
According to Fachanwalt.de, the revocation of the driving license is carried out through an administrative act by the responsible driving license authority. The loss of your driving license can be caused not only by health reasons, but also by serious traffic offenses such as alcohol or drug abuse, hit and run or gross negligence. The resulting consequences can be drastic for those affected, especially if they are professional drivers who rely on a driving license.
It is important to note that revocation of a driver's license is not the same as a driving ban. While a driving ban is temporary, the revocation of the driving license can be permanent. The only option left for those affected is to go to a hearing and sometimes even a medical-psychological examination (MPU) to check their fitness to drive again before they can submit an application for a new driving license.
The costs associated with a driver's license suspension can range from several hundred to thousands of euros, including fees, fines and legal fees. In such cases, it is therefore advisable to contact a traffic law specialist in good time to discuss possible objections or exemptions.
The situation in Thuringia shows that the implementation of driving license regulations in the health sector is taken very seriously and the authorities are paying more attention to road safety. The number of driving licenses being revoked due to health problems highlights the problem that affects many people, especially older citizens and those with previous illnesses.
