Rioting alcoholic: 3.8 per mille in the supermarket!

A turbulent day in Apolda kept both the police and rescue workers on their toes. On Thursday, a 47-year-old man entered a local supermarket even though he had been banned from there. This was the starting signal for several police operations that subsequently became necessary. The man caused chaos after falling in the store and injuring his head. With great media attention, he had to be taken to a clinic, where an alcohol test showed a shocking blood alcohol level of 3.8 per mille, according to the Borken newspaper reported.

As often happens with such incidents, this one was not without consequences. Despite his high blood alcohol content, the man left the clinic twice even though he was supposed to stay there. The first time he came back on his own, apparently unaware of his situation. The second time, he decided to visit the supermarket again and started putting alcohol and candy in his pockets. When the employees confronted him, he reacted aggressively and refused to hand over his “loot.” This led to another police operation in which the man was finally arrested and taken to a cell to sober up.

Intoxication and its consequences

Such incidents show again and again that excessive alcohol consumption is not an isolated case. According to that Mirror Caritas makes it clear that if the alcohol per mille is over three, there is a risk of acute alcohol poisoning, which in the worst case can have fatal consequences such as respiratory failure. This makes it all the more important to pay attention to your own alcohol consumption. The German Center for Addiction Issues provides alarming figures: In 2018, around 3 million adults between the ages of 18 and 64 in Germany suffered from an alcohol-related disorder. Of these, 1.6 million people were addicted to alcohol, while 1.4 million abused alcohol.

  • Alkoholmissbrauch: 1,4 Millionen
  • Alkoholabhängigkeit: 1,6 Millionen
  • 7,9 Millionen Menschen konsumieren Alkohol in gesundheitlich riskanter Form
  • 9,0 Millionen haben einen problematischen Alkoholkonsum

In an international comparison, Germany is one of the high alcohol consumption countries. The per capita consumption of pure alcohol in 2020 was: DHS 10.0 liters. This number makes it clear that the use of alcohol is often viewed uncritically - a circumstance that did not go unnoticed in Apolda. Despite his dangerous situation, the 47-year-old was unable to put an end to his alcoholic past and had to clearly feel the consequences of his actions. He was released on Friday, but the question remains whether this incident can lead to a change in his behavior.
