The ongoing drought in Germany now also has Thuringia firmly under control. The effects of extreme weather are becoming increasingly clear, especially in Weimar. Historically low water levels are recorded in many bodies of water in the state. For this reason, a temporary ban on the withdrawal of water from municipal waters came into force in Weimar on July 4, 2025. This ban applies until October 31, 2025, with the exception that water can be drawn from hand-held vessels for livestock troughs. The city administration appeals to citizens to show understanding for this measure, which aims to protect the ecological status of water bodies. Violations of the ban could be punished with fines.
Situation in Thuringia
The water abstraction ban is already active in other parts of Thuringia. So reported n-tv that the districts of Saalfeld-Rudolstadt and Hildburghausen have also taken similar measures. In Erfurt and Gera, water law bans have existed for several years. These measures are necessary to prevent irreversible damage to the basic ecological functions of small rivers. The Saale-Orla district activated its bans last week.
The current drought means that groundwater levels in the country are extremely low. According to the Thuringian State Office for the Environment, Mining and Nature Conservation (TLUBN), groundwater levels are worryingly low at around every third measuring point. The Federal Environment Agency warns that Germany will have experienced its driest period since 1931 from February to April 2025, with the region particularly affected.
Consequences for the environment
The drought also has an impact on agriculture, as yield losses and nutrient surpluses are expected. According to the German Weather Service (DWD), the region is suffering from extreme water shortages, which is more than worrying for food production. It should be noted that 70% of drinking water in Germany is obtained from groundwater and spring water, which underlines the importance of water reserves.
