Trump fears: This is how the ex-president endangers the NATO alliance!

Wiesbaden, Deutschland - The German Foreign Minister Johann WadePhul travels to the USA to promote stability in the middle of geopolitical tensions. WadePhul does not want to fuel existing conflicts in the United States. The focus is on the fact that the western alliance, especially NATO, is fighting for the stability of its foundation. This fuse costs time and energy and is difficult because the transatlantic alliance has difficulties at the moment to find compromises in particular. Security expert Carlo Masala emphasizes that the Europeans are trying to appease Trump before the NATO summit, which is scheduled to take place next June. The goal here is to avoid a large scandal and not to question the security guarantees for European countries.

The European attitude towards Ukraine

Against the background of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine and the associated tensions with China, the NATO summit, which takes place in Washington on July 11, 2024, plans to take extensive measures. A central topic will be the increase in European responsibility, especially in view of the possibility that Trump will return to the US presidential office again. WadePhul expresses that Europeans want to further tighten the sanction measures against Russia. The US Congress is therefore ready for further sanctions, while Germany supports Republican votes in the United States that are calling for a harder course to Putin.

The Ukrainian armed forces are decisively supported by coordinating NATO from Wiesbaden from arms deliveries and training. For this purpose, a command is set up under a three-star general, which is supported with around 700 forces. From Friday, this command will take over tasks that were previously perceived by the United States. In addition, Ukraine receives military aid worth at least 40 billion euros within the next year, whereby Germany has already promised a total of eight billion euros for 2024.

Risks and strategic challenges

Masala explains that the NATO question is currently of greater importance than the question of Ukraine itself. Donald Trump pursues a neutral position in the Ukraine conflict and is therefore not at the side of Europeans and Ukraine. This increases the efforts of European allies to change Trump's attitude. In addition, the concern about possible negative effects of Trump's position on Allianz is becoming increasingly pressing. In this context, it is remarkable that steps that were self-evident under the bidges are now assessed as tedious and time-consuming.

The strategic concept of NATO

The current strategic concept of NATO, which was adopted in Madrid in 2022, reacts to the Russian attack war against Ukraine and to changes in the security landscape. NATO's core tasks are the deterrent and defense as well as crisis management. Russia is identified as a central threat, while the challenges by authoritarian regime and the risks that are from China's rise are discussed. In this context, NATO has strengthened and plans to further increase its troop presence in this context.

NATO is also exposed to hybrid threats, including cyber attacks and disinformation campaigns, and intends to take measures against these challenges. This dynamic is also complicated by the unclear relationship with China and the disagreement within the NATO member states about dealing with this challenge. Nevertheless, the collective defense as the main principle of NATO remains unchanged.

Overall, the security situation in Europe is significantly influenced by the various geopolitical tensions. The efforts to stability and support for Ukraine remain crucial, while NATO is facing the challenges of its Member States.
