On May 27, 2025,

Uber introduced the new "Uber Courier" service in Germany. The service is now available in cities such as Berlin, Cologne, Munich, Frankfurt, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Hanover, Stuttgart and Mannheim. This is followed by the introduction of the courier in Great Britain, where the service was started a week earlier. According to Tagesspiegel will use its existing network of delivery partners to optimize the logistics.

The courier service aims to transport shipments of different sizes and distance with bicycles or cars. A maximum weight of 20 kilograms applies to each shipment, while the total weight may be up to 60 kilograms. The objects must also fit into the trunk of a mid -range car. Before booking, the costs for the service are displayed in the app, which are based on the estimated driving time and distance.

focus on local small business owners

Christoph Weigler, the Germany boss of Uber, emphasizes that the new service is also aimed at local small business owners. This is an important step to promote the integration of small companies into the platform industry. Despite the positive developments, Uber has been faced with resistance from taxi guilds, unions and parts of politics in Germany for over eleven years. The criticism often focuses on the working conditions and business models of the partner companies of Uber.

If the conditions do not improve sustainably, this could further burden confidence in their services. The traditional taxi companies are also critical of Uber and its market strategy. In order to counteract the resistance, over his app opened for all taxi companies in Germany last year, which led to a collaboration with around 20 percent of all taxis in Berlin.

boom of online delivery services

Statista , sales in 2023 for online delivery services were around 360 billion euros, while food deliveries generated sales of 590 billion euros. The forecasts for 2028 show a significant increase in sales in both areas, for food deliveries to up to 480 billion euros and for food deliveries to around 1.2 trillion euros.

The number of users is expected to grow from 2.6 billion in 2023 to 3.7 billion by 2028. In Germany, Lieferando dominates with a market share of 75 percent, while Uber Eats is also the leading provider in the global market for online delivery services. These developments not only show the potential of the market, but also how companies like the challenge face to be successful in a competitive environment.
