USA block UN Resolution: Gaza help in the crisis!

Gazastreifen, Palästina - The United States blocked a resolution on June 4, 2025 to calm the Gaza War in the UN Security Council with a veto. This happened despite the approval of all other 14 member states. The American UN ambassador Dorothy Shea prevented a decision-based decision that demanded an immediate ceasefire, the release of all Israeli hostages and the cancellation of the restrictions on humanitarian aid for the 2.1 million people in the Gaza Strip. The United States argued that the resolution was dubious and could strengthen the terrorist group Hamas.

The US government pointed out that the ongoing negotiations for an ceasefire would undermine the text. In addition, they criticized the fact that the resolution did not condemn the Hamas and important change requests were not taken into account. In security council circles, diplomats expressed frustration about the position of the United States, especially in view of the dramatic humanitarian situation in Gaza.

The humanitarian situation in Gaza

The humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip is worrying. The World Security Council had recently passed a resolution to increase humanitarian aid for the approximately two million people in the Gaza Strip. However, the United States contained this coordination after they had previously considered a veto. The compromise text was accepted by 13 of the 15 council members, while Russia also contained.

The resolution demands from Israel to enable safe and unimpeded humanitarian access to the Gaza Strip. A UN coordinator is to be used to ensure the control and acceleration of the aid deliveries. However, some passages that convict violations of humanitarian international law and called for an immediate suspension of violence were deleted under pressure from the United States.

criticism of the UN and Israel

The conflict on dealing with Hamas has also triggered tensions between the United Nations and Israel. Oren Marblestein, spokesman for the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, criticized UN Secretary-General António Guterres for his demands for an immediate and independent examination of incidents in which, according to Hamas, relief goods distributions were violated by Israeli attacks. Marblestein described Guterres' statement as shame and questioned the priority of the UN regarding the help of Gaza or support of Hamas.

Guterres was horrified by reports of Palestinians who were killed or injured when looking for help. He emphasized the need that Israel must allow and facilitate humanitarian aid according to humanitarian international law. The Israeli army carried out a preliminary investigation and explained that it had not been shot for civilians, but this was questioned by Hamas.

The complex dynamics and the different positions within the UN Security Council and the pressure from different sides make the situation in the Gaza Strip even more complicated. The geopolitical struggle for the control of humanitarian aid and the political implications of the conflicts require urgent attention to avoid a humanitarian catastrophe.
