Waffenruhe negotiates: Russia and Ukraine are stuck in Istanbul

The second round of negotiations between Russia and Ukraine about a possible ceasefire has ended in Istanbul today. The conversation lasted about an hour and was considered successfully by Russian news agencies such as Tass and Interfax, but the confirmation of the end of the negotiations on the Ukrainian side or the Turkish host is still pending. This remains unclear what results have emerged from the conversations. These negotiations should discuss ways from the war that has been going on for three years between the two countries, which has now requested numerous victims.

Ukraine has called for an unconditional 30-day ceasefire as a first step, while Russia has linked a fire break in strict conditions. Among other things, this includes avoiding western states on arms deliveries to Ukraine, as well as an adjustment of the mobilization of Ukrainian soldiers. It is a first but critical step in a lengthy conflict that attracts a lot of attention internationally.

reactions to the negotiations

On Tuesday, a deadline ended that the EU and European allies such as Germany, France and Great Britain had set for a complete and unconditional ceasefire. However, this ultimatum, which was aimed at Russia, was rejected by Moscow, which led to a further increase in tensions. Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced that further sanctions against Russia will be prepared in the event of a lack of progress. At the same time, the US government has also confirmed its support for the demand for a ceasefire.

The EU has already passed 16 sanction packages against Russia since the beginning of the conflict, and a 17th package is in preparation that could include measures against the Russian shadow fleet and companies that escape existing sanctions. However, Hungary's consent to new sanctions is uncertain, which could endanger previous blockages.

The demands of both sides

Russian President Vladimir Putin offered direct negotiations with Ukraine in Istanbul, emphasizing that these conversations should take place without priority. Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj has declared his willingness to meet Putin in Turkey. The US government called Trump to accept this proposal, which indicates a possible participation in the talks.

Nevertheless, there are concerns whether Putin is actually willing to meet Selenskyj directly or whether the talks are continued at the level of special envoys. Foreign Minister WadePhul has threatened Russia with consequences if the Selenskyj offer is not discussed. The location is complex and it is expected that the conflict continues to require the greatest international attention.
