Dr. Oetker buys Kathi: East German baking company remains strong!

The Dr. Oetker Group has taken an important step towards expansion and secured the East German baked goods manufacturer Kathi. The takeover has been officially announced and Carl Oetker, the group's CEO, emphasizes that Kathi is an excellent fit with Oetker's values and goals. This means that the traditional brand based in Saxony-Anhalt becomes part of a larger company that aims to continue to be present in the region and secure jobs. This development came about at the request of the Thiele family, as the Economics Minister of Saxony-Anhalt, Sven Schulze, explained. He would like the roots and values of Kathi, which are strongly linked to East German local history, to be preserved.

Around 70 employees currently work at Kathi's production site in Halle an der Saale, and the company assures that their jobs and production will be maintained under the new management. Managing director Marco Thiele assured that Kathi's business will not change. Future-oriented management and innovative strength are on the agenda, and Kathi remains independently managed as “the original from Halle an der Saale”.

Economic framework conditions in East Germany

The takeover of Kathi by the Dr. Oetker Group takes place against the backdrop of an ambivalent economic situation in East Germany. Experts describe the situation as challenging, especially with regard to the migration of young, educated elites. This migration represents one of the biggest challenges for the region, while at the same time investment is suffering, something that has been evident since the 1990s. But despite these difficulties, there is also a ray of hope: the East German manufacturing economy has stabilized over the years and has grown continuously.

Economists like Robert Barro had predicted that it could take 35 years for East Germany to catch up with its productivity gap compared to the western federal states. Surprisingly, however, significant productivity increases have already occurred before. Productivity in eastern Germany is currently around 75 percent of the western level, which shows that the structural change is far from complete.

Future prospects and challenges

While East Germany has undergone remarkable change in recent decades, the regions continue to struggle with high unemployment rates, twice as high as in the West. Nevertheless, the Halle an der Saale location and the commitment of companies like Dr. Oetker that there is also potential in the future. The aim of investing and strengthening the domestic market will be crucial to stop migration and create new opportunities.

Kathi now remains under the wing of a large company that focuses on stability, innovation and the strengthening of regional products. With the aim of preserving the company's values and strengthening its roots in the region, the takeover could be of great benefit not only for the brand itself, but also for the people and economy in East Germany. An exciting chapter in the history of German baked goods production has begun.
