Experience art up close: Guided bike tour in Frankfurt (Oder)!

On September 11, 2025, art lovers and cycling enthusiasts in Frankfurt (Oder) will have the opportunity to take a look behind the scenes on a guided bike tour. The event entitled "Behind the scenes. A tour to assess the condition of works of art" starts at 3:00 p.m. from Nahkauf on Franz-Mehring-Straße. Participation is free and requires no prior registration, although registration is recommended to make it easier to find the right place. The tour will be led by Magdalena Scherer, an employee of the Cultural Office for Art in Public Spaces.

The bike tour is part of Frankfurt's city cycling and offers an exciting insight into the valuable work being done in the field of art in public spaces. The aim is to show the condition of sculptures, wall designs and other art objects, to tell their stories and to provide information about possible damage as well as care and preservation. The route leads through the residential area of Halbe Stadt, the Kleistpark and the Botanical Garden – i.e. through some of the most beautiful corners of Frankfurt.

Extensive art landscape

Public art has developed greatly in recent decades and includes a wide range of works of art from different eras and styles. From medieval crosses to historical bronze monuments to contemporary installations and graffiti – the variety is enormous. Frankfurt offers an information database that includes almost 500 monuments and art objects that are accessible around the clock [frankfurt.de](/themen/kultur/museen-und-kunst/kultur-im-offentlichem-raum).

Internationally known artists are represented in this context, including Rosemarie Trockel and Claes Oldenburg. Jonathan Borofsky's “Hammering Man”, which has been a symbol of the city since 1991, is particularly striking. Such works of art not only have aesthetic value, but also stimulate social discussions, as was the case with the “Nanas” by Niki de Saint Phalle, which once caused a stir in Hanover and are now considered a symbol of the integration of art into everyday life wikipedia.org.

Art and community

The public art initiative not only promotes the visibility of works of art, but also dialogue within the community. Since the 1960s, art has been increasingly integrated into urban planning in order to increase the attractiveness of inner cities. Through public consultations and citizens' juries, attempts are made to involve the population in the planning process in order to avoid possible controversies and to have a good hand in implementation.

The bike tour on September 11th, 2025 is not only a trip into the countryside, but also an opportunity for all participants to actively participate in the cultural landscape of Frankfurt (Oder) and learn more about the city's treasures. Whether young or old, everyone who is interested in art will get their money's worth!
