First nationwide Veterans Day: Halle honors our heroes!
On June 15, 2025, a nationwide Veterans Day will be celebrated in Germany for the first time. In Halle (Saale) there will be a silent rally on this day from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on the market square, Roter Turm, which was registered by Karsten Gröger. The aim of this event is to honor the commitment of the soldiers and to create a space for exchange between citizens and members of the Bundeswehr. As HalleLife reports, the event is organized on a non-partisan basis and has no party political background.
But what exactly does this Veterans Day mean for service members and their families? Veterans Day is intended to show appreciation for service to the nation and has found its target group in all citizens and members of the Bundeswehr. Numerous other events are also planned as part of the celebrations. For example, a combined event with a field service, greetings, music and a social gathering will take place in Augustdorf. Special programs are also planned for Veterans Day in Euskirchen, Lippstadt and Duisburg, which offer soldiers a platform to share their experiences and stories. Further information can be found on the website veteranentag.gov.de.
A long road to appreciation
The debate for an official Veterans Day has been going on in Germany for more than a decade. As Zeit reports, the traffic light parties in the German Bundestag have now agreed on the introduction of this special tag. However, the definition of the soldiers to be honored has not yet been finally clarified. Discussions about whether only experienced and former soldiers can claim veteran status provide further fuel.
The Bundeswehr's goal is to achieve greater appreciation for its members through Veterans Day. In recent years there has been increasing emphasis on the importance of veteran status. Official measures, such as the free use of Deutsche Bahn trains for soldiers since 2020, are part of this recognition. Positive change is also urgently needed to attract new employees.
A variety of events throughout Germany
June 15, 2025 will be celebrated with a variety of events in various regions of Germany. These include:
- Ein offener Raum für Begegnungen in Unna.
- Ein ökumenischer Gottesdienst in Euskirchen am 14. Juni 2025.
- Der “Marsch der Wertschätzung” in Duisburg.
- Eine Fotoausstellung “Gesichter des Lebens” in Düsseldorf.
- Ein Benefizkonzert in Borgentreich.
These events are not only intended to provide veterans with a platform, but also to give the population the opportunity to show their respect and recognition to the soldiers, who are often in the shadows of society.
Veterans Day 2025 will be a crucial time for the Bundeswehr and its members to finally put the appreciation of their service and commitment at the center of society.
