Alarming study: Salamander and frogs fight for survival!

The alarming results of a current study by the Goethe University Frankfurt show that amphibians worldwide are increasingly suffering from extreme weather conditions. According to the researchers, 41 percent of all known amphibian species are threatened with extinction. Extreme weather events such as heat waves and droughts reinforce the decline in stocks, especially in Europe, the Amazon area and Madagascar. This development could significantly jeopardize the biodiversity in the affected regions, reports Puk.uni-Frankfurt.de .

The analysis was based on global weather data from the past 40 years and included the spread of over 7,000 types of amphibian and their risk status on the "Red List" of the IUCN. The study shows that an increase in heat waves and Dürren has correlated with a significant increase in threat status of many amphibian species since 2004. Amphibia are particularly vulnerable due to their dependence on temporary wetlands for reproduction.

special threat to salamander and frogs

In Europe, Salamander are particularly affected by the changed conditions, while in South America, frogs in particular suffer from heat waves. The head of the Wild and Zooierbiology department, Dr. Lisa Schulte warns that half of domestic real salamander in Central Europe is increasingly exposed to drought time. The recurring drought conditions represent one of the main causes for the dramatic decline of this kind.

The results of the study published on June 2nd, 2025 show that more than 300 types of amphibians have been experiencing greater threats since 2004. 93 percent of all endangered amphibians are affected by human activities, in particular by the destruction of their habitats through agriculture, pollution and infrastructure development. In many cases, these factors have overtaken the climate changes as the main cause of the decline in species, like another report by Science.de Show.

urgent protective measures required

The scientists demand targeted protective measures to improve living conditions for endangered amphibians. Suggestions include the creation of small protected areas and the improvement of wetlands. In view of the fact that amphibians are important indicators of the health of ecosystems, their protection is of crucial importance for the preservation of biological diversity.

The urgent appeals after measures illustrate the need to preserve the habitats of the amphibians and to create corridors to promote their reproduction and network. Without such efforts, the number of the endangered species could continue to increase and bring serious consequences for the global biodiversity, as well as the study by regionalheute.de
