Shots on the border: fleeting drivers die at police control

Schirnding, Deutschland - At a control of the federal police on the Border of the Czech Republic, a tragic incident occurred on June 1, 2025. In Schirnding, district of Wunsiedel, officials wanted to stop the vehicle of a fleeting driver. However, he left his car and ran away on foot. During his escape, the man pulled a gun and opened the fire to the police. In the subsequent argument, the officials returned the fire and fatally injured the man. The reason for the control, which was carried out as part of random checks in the border area, has so far been unknown. The police have not yet announced the identity of the deceased. The change of shooting occurred in the context of the controls on German internal borders that have been introduced again since October 2023, which aim to combat illegal migration.

context of the border controls

The return to border controls within the Schengen area became necessary to reduce illegal migration to the EU. Over a period between September 16, 2024 and at the end of January 2025, the federal police stopped more than 22,000 people with unauthorized entry, of which around 15,000 were returned. This number shows the decline in illegal entry compared to the previous year: If over 127,000 illegal entry were registered in 2023, the number in 2024 fell to around 83,000 - a decline of over a third.

The decline in illegal border crossings in Europe as a whole is particularly striking. According to Frontex, almost 240,000 people tried to get into the EU irregularly in 2024 - a decrease of 38 percent compared to the previous year. This corresponds to the lowest value since 2021, which is due, among other things, to the increased cooperation between the EU and partners in combating smuggling networks.

Interior Minister Nancy Faeser emphasizes the success of the measures to combat smuggling networks. Future security measures should come into force in mid -2026. The stationary controls at the borders to Poland, the Czech Republic and Switzerland, which have been carried out since mid -October 2023, as well as the random -like checks on other land limits.
