Wilders blends government: Asylum policy brings coalition to break!
Niederlande - On June 3, 2025, the government coalition in the Netherlands failed due to severe differences about migration policy. Geert Wilders, the leader of the radical right party for freedom (PVV), has explained the immediate withdrawal of his party from the existing four-party coalition. This is done in an environment in which the PVV, in the elections in November 2023, had surprisingly rose to the strongest force in parliament by wining 37 out of 150 seats. In addition to the PVV, the coalition also includes the right -wing Liberal VVD, the Center Party NSC and the right -wing populist farmers' party Bbb.
The constellation was fragile right from the start, since doubts about the constitutional fidelity of the PVV were already expressed. Most recently, there were also internal tensions when the NSC and VVD criticized the asylum policy of Wilders and questioned the competence of the PVV Minister of Asylum, Marjolein Faber. Wilders had previously drawn attention to asylum policy with a strict ten-point plan, which he considers indispensable to cope with the migration crisis.
controversial ten-point plan
Wilders calls for the closure of the limits for asylum seekers and the use of the army for border control. In addition, there should be no new asylum centers and the return of tens of thousands of Syrian refugees to their home country are sought. These measures are part of a comprehensive plan that is considered in response to the catastrophic conditions in the Dutch recording centers, such as in Ter Apel, where there are overcrowding.
The coalition partners, however, reject Wilders' strict course. The VVD and the farmers' party expressed criticism of the plans of the right-wing populist and do not support its ten-point plan. Carolin van der Plas, the leader of the BBB, as well as Dilan Yesilgöz from the VVD have expressed concerns that the goals of the PVV are not in line with the humanitarian obligations of the Netherlands.
consequences for the political landscape
With the sudden withdrawal of the PVV, the coalition is at the end, which is expected to result in new elections. Wilders had long announced that he would leave the government if his strict asylum plans were not supported. His party strives to make the Asylum policy of the Netherlands the strictest in Europe and wants to prevent the country from becoming an important center for asylum seekers.
This development is the result of months of government formation in which the asylum and migration policy was at the center of the debate. However, lawyers and experts have already expressed doubts as to whether the proposed measures are compatible with international contracts and the Basic Law of the Netherlands. A severe political current could also initiate resistance from other European countries and potential drunken conflicts within legislation.
The situation is complex, since the plans to increase the requirements for naturalizations and to increase the hurdles for foreign students and highly qualified work migrants could also have far -reaching effects on Dutch society. The uncertainty about the future of the government could significantly affect the political landscape of the Netherlands and stir up long -term social tensions. How the further developments in this political drama will be running remains to be seen. What is certain is that Geert Wilders and PVV will shape the debates about migrants and asylum in the coming months.
