Frankfurt (Oder) is starting strict organic waste controls: What needs to be taken into account now!

There is currently a real problem with organic waste in the city of Frankfurt (Oder), which is keeping citizens on their toes. The wrong things often end up in the organic waste bins, which not only hinders the extraction of valuable compost, but also disrupts the disposal processes. The latter are not allowed to send contaminated organic waste into their composting facilities if it is contaminated with non-compostable waste, reports RBB24.

In order to counteract the situation, the Frankfurt (Oder) city administration has decided to introduce controls. In the future, employees will examine the organic waste bins before collection. The aim of these measures is to make citizens understand how important proper waste separation is. After all, there are currently up to 10 percent of contaminants in the organic waste bins, which is clearly too much. From May 1st it is also mandatory that organic waste may only contain 3 percent foreign substances and 1 percent plastic.

Responsibility for proper separation

If the inspections reveal deficiencies, residents will be informed via information letters that their organic waste bin is contaminated. Contaminated organic waste must be disposed of in the more expensive way in incineration plants. While citizens do not have to expect fines, waste disposal companies could be sanctioned if they do not meet their obligations. They can even leave the organic waste bin standing if too many foreign substances are found, which could result in additional costs for the residents.

An important change also came into force on April 22, 2025: A new Section 2a in the law regulates the requirements for the removal of foreign substances from organic waste. For the first time, an input control value for the total plastic content in organic waste is set. For organic waste from households, a control value of around 1 percent applies to plastics. If these rules are not adhered to, companies can be faced with fines such as: Federal Government informed.

International developments in waste disposal

A further look beyond the borders shows that other countries are also pursuing innovative approaches to optimizing waste disposal. In Saarland, artificial intelligence is used to detect foreign substances in organic waste in order to further reduce contamination. In Riga, the capital of Latvia, attention is also paid to correct waste separation. Here, sorted waste only has to be disposed of with residual waste if there is significant contamination, such as Riga.lv reported.

The conscious sorting and correct disposal of organic waste is not only of great importance in the interest of the environment, but also for the financial relief of local residents. It is the responsibility of each individual to do their part and finally throw the right waste into the organic waste bin. Because one thing is certain: this is the only way to recover a valuable raw material from organic waste.
