Frankfurt goes digital: art, VR and new help for the homeless!

In this day and age, it is hard to miss: digitalization is increasingly entering our cities. This also became clear at the Smart City Forum in the Palmengarten Society House in Frankfurt, where numerous projects for digital urban design were presented. The digital city of the future should not only be smarter, but also more interactive. The new possibilities that augmented reality (AR) offers with the Wava app are particularly exciting. For example, users can virtually place any work of art in public spaces, such as a dinosaur sculpture on Paulsplatz, and thus express their creativity. These findings are presented by the F.A.Z. before.

Another innovative project comes from students Nikolas Arent and Ben Werner, who developed the website “Help Radar”. This platform helps to find local offers of help for the homeless more quickly and is also used by social workers to provide support efficiently. The use of digital technology is also evident in the health department, which uses modern means of communication to better support citizens.

Technological innovations for everyone

But digitalization doesn't just affect social projects - it permeates all areas of life, as the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Construction emphasizes. The challenges are not small: it is important to make digitalization sustainable and in the interests of the common good. In a dialogue with around 70 experts National dialogue platform Smart Cities Opportunities and risks discussed. One goal of this platform is to test viable “smart city” concepts by 2030.

There are exciting developments, particularly in the sports sector: Oliver Bäcker from Eintracht Frankfurt reported on the use of sensors that measure the humidity on training pitches. Digital solutions are also used in the stadium - artificial intelligence efficiently directs the flow of visitors and virtual reality glasses enable people with mobility restrictions to enjoy the stadium experience in a new way.

Citizen participation 2.0

Another important aspect of urban development is citizen participation. This is where the technologies Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) come into play. A research project called “VR-Planning – we’re planning” is exploring how these technologies can help to include everyone affected in the planning process. By using VR and AR, planners, architects, politicians and residents can work together on better solutions and explore the possibilities of new concepts. This is reported by the Fraunhofer IGD.

A guide to integrating VR and AR into urban development is intended to support decision-makers in actively shaping digital change. These innovative approaches not only create a better spatial understanding, but also promote collaboration and acceptance of new concepts.

In conclusion, digital transformation in our cities is more than just a trend. It is a way to address social challenges, open up new opportunities for citizens and make society fit for the future. Innovative projects, participatory planning and the use of new technologies are the key to success for the city life of tomorrow.
