Border controls between Frankfurt and Slubice: Citizens warn against exclusion!
The cities of Frankfurt (Oder) and Slubice are in a worrying exchange, which is becoming even more explosive due to the upcoming border controls in Poland. Both administration leaders express great concern about the possible negative consequences, such as increased social division and increasing hatred of foreigners. The common concerns stem from the fear that these controls will not solve the problems of irregular migration but could create many more challenges. Again Daily Mirror According to reports, around 90,000 people live in this region near the border and are now facing an uncertain future.
While it has been quiet at the borders recently, the new measures taken by the Polish government from August 5, 2025 could significantly change the picture. In Germany, random checks have been carried out at the border with Poland since October 2023 and were most recently increased in May. This is intended to curb unwanted migration and crime, but this also has an impact on the free movement of goods and people. According to the daily news The Federal Police is responsible for carrying out these checks flexibly, and travelers should be prepared to carry at least one ID with them.
Consequences for society and the economy
The signs of impending problems cannot be overlooked. Border controls not only lead to long waiting times that affect commuter mobility and commercial traffic, but they also promote social tensions and exclusion. The city administration's call to citizens not to take part in hostilities against strangers is no coincidence. In Slubice, a self-proclaimed “Movement to Defend the Border” is controlling people and spreading misinformation, leading to a drastic increase in hatred on social media against foreigners legally living in the region.
The fears are not only taken seriously by those affected. Experts warn that these measures could seriously jeopardize integration efforts in the region. The head of foreign trade at the DIHK has already loudly pointed out that the controls could endanger both cross-border trade and the necessary deliveries. In Bavaria, for example, there are regular traffic jams and long waiting times at border crossings, while in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania there are no significant delays. Such differences could further aggravate the economic situation in the affected regions in the future.
The future of Schengen under scrutiny
The political and social tensions triggered by border controls also cast a light on the future course of the Schengen Agreement. Since its introduction in 1985, Schengen has actually aimed to ensure freedom of movement within the EU by almost completely abolishing border controls. But the reality as it is in the Federal Agency for Civic Education explains, confronts us with the question of whether border checks could call these fundamental pillars into question. Migration researchers fear that the ongoing controls will not only make mobility more difficult, but will also endanger the entire border regime.
With federal and European solutions to migration, all actors are required to find a sustainable balance between security and maintaining freedom of movement. Dialogue between governments, which must act quickly and in solidarity, will be crucial in order not to squander the chances of integration in the region.
