Halle attacker: Legal verdict after being taken hostage in prison!

The legal disputes surrounding Stephan B., the Halle attacker, never end. Today, on July 15, 2025, the Stendal Regional Court's judgment against him due to a hostage-taking in the Burg correctional facility finally became final. The star reports that the Federal Court of Justice (BGH) has rejected all appeals by Stephan B. and the public prosecutor. This means that the sentence of seven years in prison for taking hostages, which was imposed in February 2024, remains.

The man who murdered two people in Halle on October 9, 2019 during the Jewish holiday Yom Kippur had previously tried to storm a synagogue. However, his plan failed due to the secured entrance door and technical problems with his weapons. He then shot a passer-by and a young man in a kebab shop and seriously injured two other people. As a result, he was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2020 for double murder and numerous attempted murders. The Naumburg Higher Regional Court confirmed this decision with a finding of particular gravity.

Hostage taking in prison

On December 12, 2022, another incident occurred when Stephan B. took two servants hostage in Burg prison with a self-made weapon in order to attempt to escape. However, his plan was quickly foiled when he was overwhelmed by other law officers. He was injured himself. The Naumburg Public Prosecutor's Office then filed charges of taking hostages and violating the weapons law. The ZDF stated that during the procedure, which took place under special security precautions, a psychiatric expert also warned that B. was still considered an extreme security risk.

Stephan B. is classified as incapable of treatment and not willing to treat him and shows changing behavior patterns in prison, which results in a high level of insecurity. He often seemed to live in periods of silence punctuated by sudden outbursts. Despite his extreme security situation, he received a trial that was accompanied by extensive measures to ensure the safety of those present.

With the final decision, the judiciary can now concentrate on enforcing his sentence. B. must also pay compensation totaling 23,000 euros to the two hostage employees in order to compensate for their loss of earnings and the pain they suffered. The verdict is a further step in coming to terms with the tragic events surrounding the Halle attack and the incidents in prison that were perceived as very stressful for society.
