The Ministry of Justice, headed by Franziska Weidinger, emphasizes that Halle-Tornau is considered the favorite.
However, strong commitment is also evident in Weißenfels. Supported by the CDU, they emphasize the importance of the new building and are ready to take all the necessary steps to realize it. “Clarity and reliability” from the state government is required from both cities so that this important step becomes reality.
Looking into the future
The planned new correctional facility in Halle will be built on a 17-hectare site, near the A14 federal motorway. Commissioning is scheduled for 2029, while 20 million euros are planned for preparatory measures for the financial year 2024 as a precautionary measure, according to Sachsen-Anhalt.
In the next two months, Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff wants to create clarity and put the decision on the agenda in cabinet meetings. The debate between Halle and Weißenfels remains tense as both cities strive to find the preferred location for the new building. The comparative evaluation of both locations is currently underway, and in Weißenfels there is already clear approval from the city council, while there is resistance in the Langendorf local council.
