Fight for help in the Gaza Strip: GHF under attack, thousands desperate!
The humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip remains tense as thousands of Palestinians try to reach the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) distribution centers every day to receive urgently needed aid. According to reports, violent clashes often occur in which people are injured or even killed. Emergency nurse Katja Storck from Doctors Without Borders (MSF) speaks of over 120 to over 200 injured, many of them with gunshot wounds or as a result of crowding. UN human rights spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani also reported deaths during the distributions, adding to the critical situation in the region. According to rbb24, over 500 people have died and almost 4,000 have been injured in recent weeks. Despite these alarming figures, the GHF denies any violent incidents at its distribution points.
The new GHF distribution centers have been set up since the end of May, following a partial lifting of the blockade. The system, supported by the US state, is intended to replace the previous UN mechanism, but has been sharply criticized by numerous international NGOs. Over 170 organizations are calling for an immediate return to the UN distribution mechanism as the GHF continues to come under criticism. Doctors Without Borders accuses GHF of luring those in need into "death traps" as reports say Palestinians are forced to lie on the ground to wait for a signal from drones before being allowed to enter distribution centers. After dispersal, tear gas is often used to disperse people, further exacerbating an already tense situation.
Accusations and criticism of the GHF
Criticism of the GHF is becoming louder, not only from MSF, but also from “Save the Children Germany”. Aid organizations deplore the danger to civilians and call for an end to relief efforts by the GHF, which many report is unable to meet the basic needs of Gazans. Lack of water, fuel, food and hygiene products has already made life unbearable for millions of people in the Gaza Strip. This dramatic situation also results from the ongoing fighting that began after Hamas' massive attack on Israel last year, on October 7, 2023. Over 56,300 people are believed to have died in the Gaza Strip since then, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, while access to medical care and essentials is severely limited. This has led to a humanitarian catastrophe, as Tagesschau reports.
Given these dramatic circumstances, Amnesty urges an immediate end to the siege and calls on all parties to the conflict to call for a ceasefire. “A ceasefire could ease the suffering of the civilian population and relieve the burden on the overburdened health system,” the organization said. More and more people are reporting terrible conditions in overcrowded hospitals, where there is a lack of painkillers and emergency care. Reports of tolerated attacks on medical staff and hospitals by the Israeli army have raised alarm bells. Amnesty is therefore also calling for the return of all civilians to their homes and the release of hostages and arbitrarily detained Palestinians.
