Daycare crisis in Halle: Massive layoffs endanger care!
It's boiling in Halle! Parents and educators are now more concerned than ever with an explosive topic: the staffing shortage in daycare centers. Around 40 employees, including 11 newly trained specialists, are about to be laid off. This drastic measure that the city administration has implemented is causing additional unrest, as many daycare centers in Halle have already had to limit their childcare hours due to illness and vacation. Parents are now required to pick up their children at lunchtime and look after them at home. It becomes clear here that the pressure to adapt to the professional demands of many families is increasing immeasurably. As dubisthalle.de reports, the sickness rate in the daycare center's own operation increased to 8.5 percent in May, but remains below the level of the daycare center winter months. But the parents see the city administration's statements as trivializing the precarious situation.
The Green Youth Hall has accused the city administration of being “terrifyingly short-sighted” when it comes to education policy. Their demands are clear: There must be an immediate stop to the layoffs and a rethinking of the financing and structure of the daycare centers! The underfunded early childhood education in Saxony-Anhalt ultimately leads to a poor childcare ratio, which further increases the burden on educators. A circumstance that simply cannot be ignored.
Closures and restrictions: A broad trend
The problems in Halle are not an isolated case. A look at the state of Saxony-Anhalt shows that as early as December 2023, at least 280 of 1,800 crèches, kindergartens and after-school care centers had to change their care times due to a lack of staff. This means that every sixth facility is affected! While 250 facilities shortened their opening hours, 25 even had to close, as gew-sachsenanhalt.net reports. A catastrophic situation when you consider that Saxony-Anhalt has one of the most unfavorable skilled worker-child ratios in the area of U3 care.
The head of a daycare center in Salzwedel puts it in a nutshell: The staffing ratio assumes that skilled workers are constantly present, but this is not the case due to absences. The pressure on educators is growing and leading to a vicious circle of overwork and illness. Nicole Anger from the DIE LINKE parliamentary group also warns of the consequences: time for educational tasks is often left behind.
The future of early childhood education
Given the alarming situation in daycare centers, the question arises: What does the future of early childhood education in Germany look like? According to the state monitoring of early childhood education, there is a shortage of around 385,900 daycare places in the western German states. Things are even worse in East Germany: There are around 44,700 places that are urgently needed. Scientific recommendations suggest that it is time to revise the staffing ratios in order to be able to fulfill the educational mandate in daycare centers more clearly. The federal government has provided financial resources to counteract this. But is that enough to achieve sustainable improvements? bertelsmann-stiftung.de sees a need for quick and decisive action here.
Parents, educators and politicians are called upon more than ever to work together to improve the situation. It is high time that we provide our littlest citizens with adequate and good care in the daycare centers so that they receive the best possible early intervention offers. The future of our children depends on it!
