Clothing donations urgently needed: This is how Frankfurt helps the homeless!

In Frankfurt am Main there is currently an urgent need for robust everyday clothing for homeless people in the WESER5 diakonia center. Due to a lack of donations, the clothing store had to temporarily close, making the situation more difficult for many of those affected. Shoes are particularly in demand, especially sneakers and sturdy street shoes, as well as pants in sizes 31 to 33, weatherproof jackets, sweaters, T-shirts, shirts and underwear - primarily for men. Donations can be dropped off directly at the Diakoniezentrum or sent by post, even from other cities. The address for your donations is: WESER5 Diakoniezentrum, Weserstraße 560, 329 Frankfurt am Main. The reception at Weserstrasse 5/corner of Gutleutstrasse is open around the clock.

The need for this support is underpinned by a recent study, which shows that the situation of homeless people in Germany is continuing to worsen. Currently, 21% of them live in extremely precarious accommodation, while 13% live on the streets and 11.9% have no income. These alarming figures make it clear how important the offers of help in Protestant institutions, such as Diakonie, are. Dr. Jens Rannenberg therefore calls for the right to housing to be recognized as a central state obligation.

Help for those affected

Diakonie offers around 800 offers nationwide for homeless people and people at risk of homelessness. These include emergency shelters, street social work as well as outpatient and inpatient facilities for emergency housing assistance. Day stays not only allow those affected to shower and do laundry, but also access to cheap meals. Specialist advice centers are available to offer support with social benefits, contact with authorities and finding accommodation.

In the winter months, cold relief is particularly important, for example in cities such as Berlin and Hamburg providing cold buses that distribute hot drinks, blankets and sleeping bags. Sometimes the thought of winter temperatures may seem distant, but the need for these types of assistance remains year-round.

Causes of homelessness

The reasons for homelessness are diverse and range from rent debt to economic hardship to critical life events such as separation, unemployment or illness. Diakonie actively works to ensure that homeless people can take advantage of social benefits and is therefore an indispensable partner in the fight against this social imbalance.

In addition, municipalities have a duty to accommodate homeless people, even if they are not entitled to social benefits. This access must be improved, and Diakonie is fighting to reduce discrimination against homeless people in the housing market.

Another goal of Diakonie is to eliminate homelessness by 2030. The National Action Plan against Homelessness (NAP W) is seen as support. If you want to help the people around you, you can do it not only with clothing, but also by donating. Whether privately, as a company or through church communities – every support counts. Further information can be found on the website Diaconia.

So see if you can find something in your closet that you no longer need, or think about how you can make a difference with a donation. Together we can help to improve the living situation of many people.
