Narrow majority for controversial double budget in Brandenburg!

Things seem to be going haywire in the Brandenburg state parliament at the moment. How rbb24 reports, the SPD/BSW coalition only has a narrow majority of two votes, while the final vote on the controversial double budget is imminent on Friday. The tension was already noticeable in the interim vote on Thursday, when the coalition struggled to vote for the 2024 and 2025 budgets.

What makes it particularly interesting are the critical voices from within our own ranks. MP Sven Hornauf from the BSW voted against the proposal, raising doubts about the unity of the coalition. “The planned additional lesson is not a solution,” he said, and also called for a differentiated property tax assessment rate.

Budget under pressure

The current plans envisage taking on excess debt of 1 billion euros for 2024 and 1.25 billion euros for 2026. Finance Minister Robert Crumbach defends the austerity plans with reference to the economic crisis. Despite growing resources for the education budget, cuts are being made for municipalities, care and family centers, which have been causing protests for months. A positive point: By withdrawing the planned cuts, municipalities can breathe a sigh of relief. The Märkische Allgemeine reports that the coalition has abandoned original plans, which would have led to a loss of around 115 million euros per year for the municipalities.

Instead, the replacement budget for schools was increased to 15 million euros annually and there is an additional 20 million euros for daycare centers to ensure extended childcare times. Funding for road and bridge construction was also increased by 7 million euros. Despite these positive aspects, CDU leader Jan Redmann announced legal action because he doubts whether the new debt is constitutional.

The big picture

A successful budget plan is crucial for the state of Brandenburg. How on political-education-brandenburg explained, the budget includes both administrative and asset budgets and is divided into significant individual plans and a financial section. Income includes tax revenues, fees and allocations, while expenditure includes personnel expenses, social benefits and investments in public infrastructure.

The upcoming votes and the decisions surrounding the budget will certainly keep political minds in Brandenburg busy for some time. MPs face the challenge of both meeting social needs and handling finances responsibly. It only remains to be seen how the situation will develop until the final vote.
