Kwasigroch at 21: Hertha BSC goalkeeper starts new chapter in Qatar!

A bitter loss for Hertha BSC: 21-year-old goalkeeper Robert Kwasigroch is moving to Al-Markhiya SC, a club in the second division of Qatar. This reports rbb24. The Old Lady has a transfer fee of around 300,000 euros, while Kwasigroch signs a five-year contract in Qatar.

For Kwasigroch, this step is more than just a change of club. His goal is to become Qatar's national goalkeeper. “In order to play for the Qatari team, he has to live in the country for at least five years, which corresponds perfectly with the term of his contract,” comments Ayman Dahmani, the general manager of his player agency Rogon. The transfer highlights a trend of young, talented players gaining a foothold in rising football destinations such as Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

From Hertha BSC to Qatar

The change is not entirely surprising, after all Kwasigroch was only on the bench at the start of the season against Schalke 04 as a replacement for regular goalkeeper Tjark Ernst and had only played one competitive game in the professional game. He previously completed 36 appearances for Hertha BSC in the Northeast Regional League. This new chapter in his career is further underpinned by his desire for sporting change, which sports director Benjamin Weber confirmed.

Kwasigroch joined the Hertha academy in 2017 and made his professional debut in the 2nd Bundesliga in September 2023. Most recently he was active on loan at Fortuna Düsseldorf before moving to Qatar. After his departure, Hertha BSC now have Dennis Smarsch, Marius Gersbeck and Tim Goller available as goalkeepers.

Attractive offers from abroad

Why are players like Kwasigroch drawn to Qatari regions? It's not just because of the money - players in Qatar earn up to three times higher salaries than in Germany. This information is also confirmed by player agent Stefan Backs, who noted that Qatar has begun to import know-how from European leagues in order to increase the quality of football. This not only attracts young talent, but also experienced trainers and thus offers interesting perspectives for everyone involved.

The professionalism of the training conditions in Qatar is repeatedly emphasized. A move to the Arab region is no longer just an emergency solution, but is increasingly becoming a well-considered decision in order to progress in sport or to seek new challenges. So it remains to be seen how Kwasigroch will perform in the new environment and whether he will actually pursue the goals he has set for himself.
