New turning track in Halle-Neustadt: Construction work starts on June 30th!

The city of Halle (Saale) is making progress in local transport: construction work for a new turning track at the Schwimmhalle stop in Halle-Neustadt will begin on June 30, 2025. With this project, Stadtwerke Halle and Hallesche Verkehrs-AG (HAVAG) are not only strengthening the flexibility of the tram network, but are also helping to improve rail transport during rush hours and in school traffic. Loud HallSpectrum The new turning system enables targeted amplifier trips and faster detours. In this way, passenger peaks can be better cushioned and the overall network can be made more efficient.

The swimming pool stop will also function as a temporary terminus, making travel easier for passengers during the construction period. As part of the project, an additional 60 meter long siding will be built parallel to the track outside the city, which will further increase capacity. Three new switches are necessary for implementation, and adjustments to the contact wire system are also required. To ensure that everything works smoothly, the traffic lights at the An der Magistrale / Nietlebener Straße junction are being reprogrammed.

But what happens next? During the construction period, passengers and drivers must prepare for temporary restrictions. From June 30, 2025, buses will stop on the side of the road instead of in the track area. In addition, tram service will end at the S-Bahnhof Neustadt stop from July 21st, and replacement buses will be provided to Soltauer Straße and Göttinger Bogen. Drivers must expect a single-lane traffic flow in the construction area, while pedestrians can continue to get through unhindered.

Construction period and transition

Construction is scheduled to be completed by August 10, 2025, just in time for the start of the new school year, when regular tram service will resume on August 11. The remaining work, which has no impact on operations, is planned until the end of August 2025.

The construction project is part of an extensive program to expand public transport in Halle, which has been in place since 2013. According to Havag, this project aims to separate the tram from private transport and increase the comfort and speed standards of the lines. Further route expansions are also planned to put local transport on a sustainable basis.

The entire project is being financed with federal and state funding as well as the Halle municipal utility's own funds and is intended to help further increase the attractiveness of public transport in Halle. There is also a great focus on creating accessibility, as emphasized on the website of Klimaschutz Halle.

With the expansion of local transport, the city of Halle, the Stadtwerke Halle and HAVAG are relying on modern and efficient public transport that not only improves the mobility of citizens, but also sustainably supports urban development in the areas of culture, business and science.
